Volvo and Geely’s standalone brand, Polestar, aims to redefine the EV world with its breakthrough in fast charging technology. Traditionally, EVs have faced criticism for their slow charging compared to traditional ICE vehicles. However, Polestar’s recent developments suggest a transformative shift.
With the rise of fast-charging capabilities in modern smartphones, Polestar draws parallels to the potential of EV charging. The introduction of the Polestar Phone, coupled with the successful integration of StoreDot’s Extreme Fast Charging (XFC) technology in a prototype Polestar 5, marks a significant milestone.
This achievement demonstrates the capability to charge a Polestar from 10 to 80% in just 10 minutes, equivalent to the time spent refueling a traditional vehicle. While this demonstration utilized silicon-dominant cells in a drivable vehicle, Polestar aims to scale up the technology for practical application, targeting a 100 kWh battery capacity and a range of at least 320 km in 10 minutes.
Although still in the experimental phase, Polestar’s advancements hold the promise of revolutionizing EV charging, addressing one of the primary barriers to widespread adoption.
