There’s been talk about Antonelli possibly joining F1 this year, especially after Mercedes gave him extra testing time in a 2021 car to help him get used to F1 cars.
During the Miami GP weekend, news came out that a request was made to the FIA for Antonelli to get an F1 superlicence, even though he won’t turn 18 until August. We’re not sure which team made this request or if it’s for a practice run or a full race seat.
Some say Williams might be considering Antonelli as a replacement for Sargeant if Sargeant doesn’t improve his performance.
Williams team principal James Vowles said he doesn’t know much about Antonelli’s tests with Mercedes. He mentioned they’re still figuring out their driver lineup for next year and that drivers have to earn their seats based on performance.
Getting approval for Antonelli’s super licence would need support from the FIA’s safety commissions. The FIA is considering the request, but it’s a process that needs multiple votes.
Vowles emphasized that Williams has bigger issues to deal with than just drivers. They need to improve their car’s performance.
He talked about Sargeant’s progress and said he wants Sargeant to challenge his teammate, Alex, more. But he believes Sargeant is one of the top 20 F1 drivers and deserves support.
Vowles said his job is to help Sargeant get better and that Sargeant will remain in the car. He sees supporting Sargeant as crucial, especially during his home grand prix in Miami.
