During the race on Saturday, Norris was involved in a collision with Lance Stroll from Aston Martin, along with Fernando Alonso from Aston Martin and Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes. Norris had to stop because his McLaren car was damaged. He then got out of his car and walked back to the pit lane without asking the race marshals for permission.
The race stewards have decided to give Norris a warning and a fine of €50,000 for walking on the track while the race was still going on. Half of the fine is suspended, but if Norris does something similar again, he will have to pay the full amount.
The stewards said, “After crashing out of the race in Lap 1, the driver of car 4 abandoned his car in the run off area and walked back to the pits. He thereby crossed the track that was live at this time. He did not have permission from the marshals to do so.”
They also explained that walking on a track that’s still in use can be very dangerous, and drivers need to be careful. They reminded Norris about the risks involved in his actions.
This isn’t the first time a driver has been punished for doing this. Last year, Lewis Hamilton got the same punishment for doing something similar during the Qatar GP.
This is the first time Norris has gotten a warning like this in the 2024 season. According to the rules, if a driver gets five warnings in a season, they will face a penalty on the starting grid for the next race. But Norris doesn’t have to worry about this yet because his offense in Miami doesn’t count as a driving infringement.
Norris’s teammate, Oscar Piastri, managed to get some points for McLaren by finishing sixth in the sprint race.
