Most of Magnussen’s rule-breaking happened while he was racing against Hamilton, who was behind Nico Hulkenberg. Hulkenberg finished in seventh place, getting two points for his team Haas. Magnussen’s actions slowed down Hamilton and affected the race result.
Magnussen admitted that the penalties were fair. He explained that he had a good position behind Hulkenberg and was doing his best to protect it. But when Hulkenberg cut a corner and Magnussen lost his advantage, he had to fight harder to keep Hamilton behind.
Magnussen admitted that he used tactics he didn’t like, similar to what he did in Jeddah, where he was penalized for holding up other cars. However, he believed it was necessary to help his teammate Hulkenberg secure his position.
Eventually, Magnussen let Hamilton pass him. This happened after they collided at Turn 11 on lap 14, which allowed another driver, Tsunoda, to overtake Hamilton. Although Hamilton managed to pass Tsunoda later, he received a penalty after the race for speeding in the pitlane, which pushed him down to 16th place.
