Over two years, Tinman Fabrications, nestled in Melton, Victoria, meticulously crafted a singular vision, breathing new life into the beloved FJ Cruiser.
The brainchild of an enthusiast, this project unfolded with a meticulous approach, aiming to create a vehicle that, from a distance, could easily be mistaken for a production model straight off the Toyota assembly line.
Delving into the intricate process, the transformation involved a series of complex maneuvers, including the removal of the SUV’s rear bodywork and the extension of its chassis to accommodate the envisioned single-cab ute configuration.
Key to the project’s success was the integration of carefully sourced components from various vehicles, ensuring both functionality and aesthetic harmony.
The rear cab wall, for instance, was ingeniously procured from a Nissan Patrol GU ute, seamlessly melding with the FJ’s original design language. However, challenges arose with the FJ’s wheelbase, necessitating a delicate balance between structural integrity and design coherence.
Undeterred, the owner and craftsmen at Tinman Fabrications opted for a bold solution, meticulously cutting and extending the frame by 300mm to achieve the desired proportions. With the foundation laid, attention turned to the practicalities of utility, culminating in the fitting of a robust tray and the installation of bead-lock wheels ensconced in rugged all-terrain tires.
Moreover, the ingenuity extended beyond mere aesthetics, with the repurposing of the leftover rear section of the FJ’s body to serve as a functional storage space for a toolbox, underscoring the workshop’s commitment to both form and function.
