Between 1964 and 1977, Chevrolet’s Chevelle series showcased a range of compelling models. Among them, the 1965 Z-16 holds a special place in my heart, closely followed by the 1970 SS. Although opinions may vary, many consider the 1970 Chevelle as the epitome of performance during its time.
The 1970 model year marked a significant evolution in the Chevelle’s design, with Chevrolet introducing the iconic coke-bottle shape, quad headlamps, and a sleek roofline, especially notable in the hardtop variant. Additionally, Chevrolet offered various intriguing engine options for enthusiasts.
The Chevelle SS continued to boast a big-block V8 engine as standard. The displacement grew from 396 to 402 cubic inches (6.5 to 6.6 liters), with the base model producing 350 horsepower. Opting for the L78 upgrade increased the power output to 375 horses. However, the most notable addition for 1970 was the 454-cubic-inch (7.4-liter) engine.
This year, Chevrolet provided two variants of the 454 engine. The LS5 offered 360 horsepower, while the high-performance LS6 delivered an impressive 450 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, making it the most potent production car of the muscle car era.
Yet, let’s divert our attention to a lesser-known gem, the SS 396. Recently endorsed by Chevelle expert Patrick Glenn Nichols, this meticulously restored hardtop features the smaller 402-cubic-inch V8. While not the most powerful option, it exudes timeless charm and museum-quality appeal.
Despite undergoing a comprehensive restoration, some components of this Chevelle are replacements or reproductions. Nevertheless, it retains its original numbers-matching block and M40 automatic transmission. Notably, the owner upgraded the original L34 to an L78 engine, enhancing its performance while preserving its authenticity.
Visually stunning with its Fathom Blue exterior, white vinyl top, and matching interior, this Chevelle stands out from the crowd. While its rarity may vary, the blue-on-white combination exudes a unique allure that fascinates enthusiasts and collectors alike.
