Recently, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducted safety tests on luxury sedans from Genesis, the Hyundai-owned brand. Unsurprisingly, both the G80 and G90 models earned the institute’s prestigious Top Safety Pick+ award. However, there are areas for improvement, particularly in crashworthiness and headlight performance.
In the case of the G80, there’s a notable difference in safety ratings between the combustion engine and electric variants. While the former excelled in multiple crash tests, the latter received an acceptable rating due to issues with lap belt positioning during the moderate overlap front crash test. Similarly, the G90 faced a similar challenge, resulting in an acceptable rating.
Both models also received acceptable ratings for headlight performance, with the IIHS noting inadequate visibility in certain driving conditions. However, the G90 stood out with a maximum good rating for its front crash prevention system’s performance in vehicle-to-pedestrian scenarios.
In terms of ease of use for child safety seats (LATCH system), only the G90 earned a good rating, while the G80s received acceptable and marginal ratings due to various challenges. Additionally, the G90 achieved a good rating for seat belt reminders, while the G80’s rating was deemed acceptable.
Despite these findings, the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating for both the G80 and G90 models remains a significant endorsement. These ratings apply to 2024 models produced after October 2023, reinforcing Genesis’ commitment to safety in their luxury lineup.
