Nissan’s introduction of the R35 marked a significant milestone in automotive history. Revealed at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, this successor to the Skyline GT-R will celebrate its 17th anniversary later this year. Despite its age, the R35 remains a formidable contender in the performance car segment.

A recent comparison by Tang from CSL AutoTime pitted the R35 against a Stingray equipped with the Z51 performance package. With the exception of one race where launch control wasn’t engaged, the R35 effortlessly outperformed its V8-powered American counterpart. Over three races, the R35 achieved an impressive best time of 10.98 seconds at 202 kilometers per hour (126 miles per hour).

The R35’s prowess stems from its powerful V6 engine, which delivers peak torque early in the rev range, surpassing the Corvette’s output by nearly 100 horsepower. Despite similar peak torque figures, the two cars differ significantly in their drivetrains and mechanical configurations.

While the R35 features all-wheel drive and a twin-turbocharged V6, the Corvette adopts a rear-wheel-drive layout with a naturally aspirated V8. Moreover, their transmissions, sourced from different manufacturers, further differentiate their driving experiences.

Despite Nissan’s silence on the R36’s powertrain, speculation suggests it will draw inspiration from Formula E racers. Whether Nissan opts for a battery-electric or hybrid powertrain, the GT-R’s future remains uncertain. However, Nissan’s commitment to ensuring the GT-R’s continued success underscores its dedication to innovation and performance.
