The genesis of the legendary Porsche 911 Turbo traces back to the 1973 Frankfurt auto show, where Porsche tantalized enthusiasts with the promise of a new, high-powered 911 variant. This groundbreaking model would feature a turbocharged flat-6 engine, setting the stage for the iconic 930-generation 911 Turbo. At the heart of this pivotal moment was a concept car, meticulously restored by its current owner to recapture its debut-day allure.
Despite the absence of a functional turbocharged engine, the concept stunned audiences with its futuristic design and bold vision. Sporting a mock turbocharging system crafted from wood and painted to mimic metal, it proudly displayed the “Turbo” script, marking a significant milestone in Porsche’s storied history.
Built on the chassis of a 1973 911 S, bearing chassis number 9113300157, the concept boasted the widened body of its production counterpart, adorned with a distinctive rear wing and larger-diameter Fuchs-style wheels.
Its attractive presence foreshadowed the exhilarating performance and unmistakable styling that would define the 911 Turbo lineage. Following its showcase at various auto shows, the concept transitioned into a development mule, aiding in the refinement of race car components for the burgeoning 911 Turbo production line. In 1975, it found its way into private ownership when racing driver and Porsche importer for Australia, Alan Hamilton, acquired the car during a visit to the Porsche factory.
Since then, the concept has changed hands multiple times, finding its current residence in Europe. Set to make a public appearance at an event at Hampton Court Palace in the U.K. from Aug 30 onwards, it continues to attract Porsche fans with its rich heritage and enduring allure. While this concept holds a special place in Porsche’s history, it is not to be confused with the first production 911 Turbo.
That distinction belongs to a separate narrow-body variant, presented to Louise Piëch, daughter of Porsche founder Ferdinand Porsche, on her 70th birthday in 1973. Now housed in the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, this car serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the iconic 911 Turbo lineage.
