This 1969 DeTomaso Mangusta is one of just 401 examples crafted over four years. Originally surfacing for sale in Los Angeles in 1977, it found its way to Chuck Wray’s collection in the late 2000s before undergoing a refurbishment around 2010. A California owner commissioned a makeover, resulting in a striking silver exterior and tan leather interior, earning the car the People’s Choice Award at the 2012 La Jolla Concours d’Elegance.
Powered by a 302ci Ford V8 paired with a ZF five-speed manual transaxle, this Mangusta delivers thrilling performance. It boasts a host of features, including power-assisted disc brakes, coilover independent suspension, and 15” Campagnolo alloy wheels. Inside, the cabin exudes luxury with air conditioning, power windows, and four-point harnesses.
The Mangusta’s development traces back to a failed Can-Am project between De Tomaso and Shelby. Repurposing the P70 prototype’s foundation, the Mangusta debuted at the 1966 Turin Motor Show, attracting audiences with its unique design. This particular example underwent a color change during refurbishment, now gleaming in silver. Despite minor wear, including chips and stress cracks, this Mangusta retains its iconic presence.
