BMW revealed the striking Concept Skytop at the Concorso d’Eleganza event, where it was sponsored for 25 years. Just days earlier, Mercedes showcased the first of its Mythos cars in Monte Carlo, the F1-inspired, SL-based PureSpeed spider. This remarkable vehicle will be limited to 250 units, with production beginning in 2025. The BMW Concept Skytop presents itself as a meticulously crafted vehicle sculpture.
Its flowing, sporty elegance is balanced by an athletic, muscular stance. The car’s interior and exterior feature warm monochromatic colors, integrating exclusive materials with traditional craftsmanship.
“The BMW Concept Skytop is a truly unique and exotic design, in the tradition of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este,” states Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group Design. “It offers a combination of driving dynamics and elegance at the highest level, comparable to its historic ancestors, like the BMW Z8 or BMW 503.”
The exterior design of the BMW Concept Skytop inspires a desire to travel with its taut, muscular surfaces, defined by precise lines that direct the vehicle’s volume towards the rear. Integrated winglets replace conventional door handles, enhancing the sleek look. Light alloy wheels with precise lamellas add to its distinctive appearance.
The car’s prominent sweeping bonnet, iconic BMW shark-nose design with illuminated kidney grille, and retracted rear section catch the eye. The pronounced spline extending from the bonnet through the interior to the aluminum trim on the tailgate emphasizes the dynamic flow of the silhouette. The highly detailed headlights incorporate the latest technology and design for a slim profile, with LED units mounted on milled aluminum carriers.
Inside, the BMW Concept Skytop showcases brogue-style leather surfaces, with seats in a reddish-brown tone that creates a luxurious and spacious feel. Crystal applications in the cockpit add to the impression. The interior surfaces were crafted in the traditional saddlery of the BMW Group plant in Dingolfing. The car features a leather-finished roll-over bar with side fins on the B-pillar and a fully retractable rear window.
The two removable leather-finished roof parts can be stored in a special compartment in the luggage space. The color scheme ensures a smooth transition from interior to exterior, with a reddish-brown tone of the roof flowing into a muted silver with a chrome shadow effect on the exterior paintwork. An experienced master painter at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing crafted this intricate color gradient.
Echoing the power of the legendary BMW Z8, the BMW Concept Skytop is equipped with the most powerful V8 engine in the BMW drive train portfolio, ensuring a driving experience that matches its striking design. As the BMW Concept Skytop is still a concept car, specific pricing details have not been disclosed.
Concept vehicles often serve as design studies or previews of future production models, and they typically do not have set prices since they are not intended for immediate sale. The Skytop Concept, based on the 8 Series platform, showcases potential future styling cues for BMW but remains a speculative piece at this stage without a confirmed price tag.
