The latest iteration of the Mercedes-AMG GT has made its debut in the online configurator, continuing the legacy of this iconic model line that started in 2014 after the SLS AMG. The new model is heavier it weighs 4,343 lb (1,970 kg) at the curb but it nevertheless carries on the AMG GT heritage.
The original AMG GT, known for its role as a Formula 1 safety car, boasted an all-aluminum and magnesium body and a weight of just 3,560 lb (1,615 kg). This front-engine, rear-wheel-drive supercar has consistently been celebrated for its lightweight construction, attracting buyers who frequently opt for the more powerful variants.
Metcalfe explains that the added weight is primarily due to enhancements like all-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering. Despite the extensive use of aluminum, the AMG GT has transitioned into more of a grand tourer, with features like a sunroof, massaging seats, advanced air conditioning, and the Burmester 3D Surround Sound system contributing to the weight gain.
Metcalfe appreciates the new high-performance coupe, asserting that it still embodies the AMG spirit, but the weight increase remains a mystery. Without a thorough analysis, it is unclear how features such as all-wheel drive, rear-wheel steering, optional rear seats, advanced safety technology, additional screens, and enhanced cabin comfort collectively added over 600 lb to a car designed to be nimble.
The hybrid variant weighs even more, at 4,674 lb (2,120 kg). Mercedes-Benz is likely to allow AMG to develop lighter special editions of the GT in the future, possibly shedding 200 lb and slightly increasing the price.
