Antonelli Poised for F1 Debut as FIA Lowers Superlicence Age

The FIA has updated Appendix L of its International Sporting Code to include a new provision. This states that while the minimum age for an F1 superlicence remains 18 years old, exceptional drivers may now receive one at 17 years old under special circumstances. This change also applies to the requirements for a superlicence used solely for free practice sessions, allowing Antonelli to possibly debut in FP1 before his 18th birthday on August 25.

According to Article 13.1.2 of Appendix L, “At the sole discretion of the FIA, a driver judged to have recently and consistently demonstrated outstanding ability and maturity in single-seater formula car competition may be granted a Super Licence at the age of 17 years old.”

Antonelli has been strongly tipped to join Mercedes for the 2025 season, alongside George Russell, following Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari. Mercedes has supported Antonelli since his karting days, and he has quickly risen through the ranks with notable wins in Italian F4 and the Formula Regional European Championship in 2022 and 2023 respectively, driving for Prema. Despite struggling with the new Dallara chassis in his first Formula 2 season with Prema, Antonelli has shown promise.

Earlier this year, there were reports that Mercedes inquired with the FIA about granting Antonelli a superlicence before turning 18. The FIA’s recent rule changes appear to address this request. These adjustments mean Antonelli could potentially debut in FP1 sessions, or even compete in races, before F1’s summer break, if the FIA determines he meets their criteria.

Reports had suggested Antonelli might replace Logan Sargeant midway through this season, prompting the request to lower the minimum age to 17. However, team principal James Vowles denied these rumors earlier in the season.
