Contrary to popular belief, car companies like Ford and Chevrolet aren’t leading the pack in American-made vehicles.
2024 American-Made Index (AMI), only one car from the Detroit Three (Jeep Gladiator, possibly made by Stellantis, a European company) cracks the Top 10.
Tesla, however, continues its dominance with the Model Y, which has taken the top spot for the third year running. This year’s AMI showcases a shift, with Japanese manufacturers joining Tesla at the forefront.
While Tesla remains the sole US automaker in the Top 10, some of its models dip in ranking compared to previous years, possibly due to increased domestic production by other carmakers aiming to capitalize on electric vehicle incentives.
While Tesla’s dominance in the American-Made Index (AMI) was undeniable in 2023, with their S3XY models snagging the top four spots, this year’s rankings tell a different story.
A shift in sourcing for the Model 3, including batteries previously from China, resulted in a significant drop to 21st place.
This year’s AMI reflects a more competitive world, with Honda and Jeep models showing strong alongside Toyota and Volkswagen.
