Mercedes-Benz’s approach with the EQE and EQS sedans has resulted in a silhouette some have likened to eggshells.
This design decision, however, appears to be subjective, as reflected in the models’ sales performance. Starting at $75,000 for the EQE and reaching $104,400 for the EQS, they enter a market where Tesla offers the more affordable Model 3 at $39,000 and the full-size Model S at $73,000.
We can look at the recently refreshed 2025 Porsche Taycan for a more direct comparison within the luxury segment. Its base price of $99,400 positions it similarly to the EQS.
Higher Taycan trims like the 4S at $118,500 and the Turbo reaching $173,600 push the price ceiling further.
Despite the cost, many consider the Taycan the pinnacle of EV sedans, offering a compelling blend of luxury, sportiness, and efficiency. Recent engineering advancements have further solidified its status.
The platform remains unchanged, yet the Taycan now boasts increased power, improved energy efficiency, and larger battery packs.
This evolution is particularly evident in the new Taycan Turbo GT, which joins the ranks of hyper-sedans alongside the likes of the Tesla Model S Plaid and Lucid Air Sapphire, solidifying the Taycan’s position among the elite.
However, some have expressed disappointment with their design language. These critics argue that the vehicles depart from the brand’s heritage of bold and innovative design.
Instead, they perceive the EQE and EQS as playing it safe, resembling more conventional sedans rather than pushing the boundaries of automotive design.
This critique highlights a potential disconnect between the cutting-edge technology of the EQE and EQS and their more conservative aesthetic.
In response to this, industrial designer Giorgi Tedoradze has proposed a fresh vision for the design language of Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles, aiming to bridge this gap and create a more visually exciting future for the brand.
