A collective gasp, tinged with amusement, rippled through the car community as West Coast Customs proudly revealed their latest project on social media. The center of attention? A comprehensively overhauled 1990s Toyota 4Runner, a truck that’s like a time capsule from a specific era of car customization all chrome, extreme body kits, and slammed suspensions.

The accompanying caption credits the shop’s students for their restoration work, but the true star of the show is the vehicle’s outrageous makeover. These alterations, while undeniably eye-catching, are a far cry from the functionality-focused mods favored by today’s off-road enthusiasts. What was once cutting-edge customization in the 90s now borders on the tastelessly outdated.

Bigger tires, lift kits, extra lights, winches, and snorkels are the hallmarks of a truly capable off-roader. But West Coast Customs took a decidedly different route with this 4Runner. In place of the rugged appeal typically associated with the vehicle, they’ve opted for a bagged suspension that practically kisses the asphalt.

Outlandishly wide aftermarket wheels are shod in low-profile tires, seemingly struggling to find space beneath the extensively reworked wheel arches. These arches, devoid of the muscular lines of the original design, hint at the extensive body sculpting that the 4Runner has undergone.

The side skirts have received similar treatment, further emphasizing the radical nature of this customization project. It’s a head-turning example of a vehicle transformed, pushing the boundaries of conventional design. The factory-fresh look is a distant memory, replaced by a complete overhaul that exudes individuality.

A striking blue paint job takes center stage, setting the tone for the rest of the bold modifications. The undisputed showstopper might be the reworked grille, adorned with a Lexus badge.

This unexpected touch of luxury creates a fascinating juxtaposition with the undeniably audacious exterior elements. While the rear end stays mostly true to its origins, sporting just new taillights and a subtle West Coast Customs emblem on the window, the interior gets a luxurious makeover as well.
