When the new Toyota Prius hybrid was revealed at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show, the automotive media community was thrilled. After a dull post-pandemic period, this new Prius brought excitement, especially coming from Toyota.

Many wondered if the Prius would still be relevant today. While the early Prius models were groundbreaking for their eco-friendliness, today’s market is leaning towards all-electric cars, making the gas-powered Prius seem outdated. To find out how the Prius holds up today, I spent a week driving the 2024 Toyota Prius XLE.

A Striking New Design

The new Prius is now in its fifth generation and combines legendary fuel efficiency with a bold design. This model boasts a 0-60 mph time in about 7 seconds and an impressive EPA-estimated 52 mpg combined. The 2024 Prius XLE is stylish, efficient, and performs well – a combination that was overdue.

First Impressions

The new Prius is one of the best-looking cars on the road. Toyota’s new “hammerhead” design fits perfectly with the car’s sleek lines, and the large wheels pushed to the corners give it a concept car feel. The rear Cylon taillight looks futuristic, especially at night.

Driving Experience

The new Prius is the most powerful yet, with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that together produce 194 horsepower. The car runs smoothly, though the gas engine can be noisy when it kicks in. It’s quick, with a 0-60 mph time in the 7-second range. The Prius is tuned for comfort, absorbing road bumps well, and handles nicely, although the steering could feel better with different tires.

Performance Specifications

  • Engine: 2.0-liter hybrid
  • Transmission: CVT
  • Horsepower: 194 HP
  • Torque: 139 LB-FT
  • Motor: 83 kW
  • Battery: 222V
  • Fuel Economy: 52 MPG combined

Fuel Efficiency

The Prius XLE is rated at 52 mpg for city, highway, and combined driving. In my experience, I averaged around 45 mpg, which is still good but slightly disappointing compared to other hybrids like the Ford Maverick.

Interior Comfort

Toyota did a great job with the Prius’ interior, blending futuristic vibes with practicality. The driver’s seat is comfortable and adjustable in 8 ways, while the passenger seat adjusts manually in 6 ways. The rear seats, though less roomy, are fine for children. The cabin feels well-made with quality materials and minimal noise.

Interior Dimensions

  • Front Headroom: 38.0 Inches
  • Rear Headroom: 36.4 Inches
  • Front Shoulder Room: 55.3 Inches
  • Rear Shoulder Room: 52.8 Inches
  • Front Hip Room: 54.7 Inches
  • Rear Hip Room: 51.7 Inches
  • Front Legroom: 43.2 Inches
  • Rear Legroom: 34.8 Inches

Technology and Usability

The 12.3-inch multimedia display primarily controls media functions, while climate controls have physical buttons. This setup makes it easy to use. The digital gauge display behind the steering wheel is hard to see, though, as the steering wheel blocks it.

Cargo Space

The Prius retains its liftback design, offering 20.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up. The 60/40-split rear seats can fold down to increase cargo space, but there’s no official number for the maximum volume.

The hybrid market is crowded, but few cars directly compete with the Prius. Its former competitors, like the Chevrolet Volt and Honda Insight, are no longer around. The Hyundai Ioniq has shifted to an all-electric lineup. Other hybrids like the Ford Maverick and Kia Niro offer different benefits, but the Prius stands out with its blend of style and efficiency.

Final Thoughts

Despite the rise of electric vehicles, the Toyota Prius remains relevant and practical. It’s efficient, comfortable, and now, for the first time, stylish. The 2024 Prius XLE proves that a hybrid can be both functional and good-looking, making it a smart choice for today’s drivers.
