The 1971 Pontiac Firebird lineup was a tale of two models. While the iconic Trans Am was just starting to ignite the public’s imagination with 2,116 units sold, the base Firebird remained the undisputed sales champion, increasing its tally from the previous year to a robust 23,021 units.

The Esprit trim also experienced growth, climbing to 20,185 cars, while the Formula model saw a modest increase, settling at 7,800 units. Now, a time capsule from this era has emerged. A 1971 Firebird, born and bred in California, has been unearthed from a decade-long hibernation in a Riverside barn. Its original owner, weary of driving, had consigned it to storage until recently discovered and listed for sale on eBay.

Under the hood lies the believed original 350 V8 engine, which has undergone a rebuild. While it currently fires up, the presence of aged gasoline necessitates a fuel system flush and cleaning before its true performance can be assessed. This 1971 Firebird offers a promising foundation for a dedicated restoration project.

The car’s exterior, while exhibiting typical wear and tear consistent with its age, maintains its structural integrity. Previous repairs are evident, primarily on the doors, but the absence of rust in the crucial trunk and floor areas is a positive indicator of the car’s condition.

The interior benefits from clean storage conditions, and all electrical components function as expected. To sweeten the deal, the seller includes an Edelbrock air cleaner and the original valve covers. Currently listed on eBay with a reserve price yet to be met, the Firebird has already ignited a bidding war, with the highest offer reaching $3,250. As the auction clock winds down, the final selling price for this classic muscle car remains an intriguing unknown.
