The Fast Lane Car channel recently showcased a thrilling comparison between the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter and the 2025 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter. While Toyota is gradually transitioning its North American lineup to hybrid-only models, the 2024 Tacoma i-Force Max and 2025 4Runner Trailhunter are prime examples of this gradual shift.

With a starting price of $46,300, the i-Force Max-equipped Tacoma is a significant investment, and the Trailhunter trim adds another $16,600 to the price tag. However, it’s worth noting that the TRD Pro with i-Force Max is only slightly more expensive at $63,900.

Given Tacoma’s recent acquisition of the i-Force Max hybrid option, The Fast Lane Car team was keen to compare it to the iconic 2024 Land Cruiser. Interestingly, Chase also had the unique opportunity to examine a pre-production 2025 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter prototype, providing a static comparison alongside the Tacoma.

The Trailhunter trims of both the Tacoma and 4Runner are designed for off-road enthusiasts, featuring rugged exterior styling, enhanced suspension systems, and advanced off-road technology. The Tacoma Trailhunter boasts features such as a lifted suspension, off-road tires, a front skid plate, and a rear differential locker. The 4Runner Trailhunter, on the other hand, offers similar off-road capabilities with additional features like a roof rack, a rear camera, and a digital rearview mirror.

The comparison between the Tacoma and 4Runner Trailhunter is particularly intriguing because they represent two different approaches to off-road capability. The Tacoma is a mid-size pickup truck, that offers versatility and practicality for everyday use. The 4Runner, on the other hand, is a more traditional SUV, prioritizing comfort and space. Both vehicles have their strengths and weaknesses, and the choice between them ultimately depends on individual needs and preferences.

The Toyota Trailhunter lineup, consisting of the N400 Tacoma and N380 4Runner, offers a compelling blend of off-road capability and everyday comfort. Both vehicles are equipped with a powerful 326-hp i-Force Max engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and part-time 4WD. This robust powertrain provides ample torque for tackling challenging terrain while ensuring a smooth and responsive driving experience.

While they share many similarities, including bronze wheels, Rigid front lights, and ARB-branded accessories, there are notable differences to suit various lifestyles. The Tacoma Trailhunter, with its larger six-foot bed, is ideal for those who require extra cargo space for outdoor adventures, tools, or equipment.

On the other hand, the 4Runner offers more rear passenger room, making it a comfortable option for families or those who frequently travel with companions. Both vehicles are equipped with Trailhunter-branded upper control arms and EMU-branded front suspensions, enhancing their off-road performance and handling.

Additionally, large spare wheels are mounted under the bumpers, providing peace of mind for those venturing into remote areas. The Tacoma Trailhunter also features an ARB-branded rear bumper with bright red tow hooks, further emphasizing its rugged capabilities.
