The 1968 Shelby GT500KR, a legendary muscle car known as the “King of the Road,” is a coveted piece of automotive history. Its powerful 428 Cobra Jet V8 engine, aggressive styling, and Shelby’s racing pedigree make it a highly sought-after collectible.

However, owning one comes with a hefty price tag, especially for numbers-matching examples in pristine conditions. Recently, a 1968 GT500KR was up for auction, but the seller pulled the listing when the reserve price wasn’t met. The highest bid reached $142,000, but it wasn’t enough to secure a sale.

While some believe the car could fetch more, others argue that the market is shifting, and expectations should be tempered. Similar Mustangs have failed to sell at auction this year, although there have been examples that fetched over $200,000 in 2023.

This particular GT500KR has a history of its own. Originally painted Lime Gold, it was later refinished in red with white rocker-panel strikes. Other visual cues include a twin-scoop hood with vents, quarter and side scoops, a rear spoiler, sequential headlights, 15″ wheels with BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires, and a USA plaque at the rear, likely added during its time overseas under the ownership of a U.S. serviceperson.

The interior of this classic muscle car offers a look into the past. Front bucket seats and a folding rear bench provide comfortable seating for passengers, while black carpeting and woodgrain trim add a touch of luxury. A vintage AM radio with an eight-track player, branded seatbelt buckles, and a two-spoke steering wheel complete the retro aesthetic.

The five-digit odometer shows approximately 65,000 miles, a testament to its history. Unfortunately, the air conditioning system and tachometer are currently inoperative. Under the hood lies the heart of this beast: a 428 ci R-code Cobra Jet V8 engine.

Factory-fitted with a four-barrel Holley carburetor, this powerplant delivers a staggering 335 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a three-speed C6 automatic transmission.
