In the heart of Cincinnati, Ohio, amidst the bustling city streets, lies a hidden gem: a garage transformed into a motorcycle enthusiast’s haven. Its creator, Mike Mitchum, is a man driven by a lifelong passion for motorcycles.
By day, he navigates the digital world as an IT director, but it’s in his garage where his true calling lies. Mike’s journey began in the company of his motorcycle-loving relatives, igniting a spark that has grown into a roaring flame.
His latest project, a stunning cafe racer dubbed “Tanso,” is a testament to his dedication and talent. Starting with a 1977 Suzuki GS550, Mike spent three years meticulously transforming the classic UJM into a modern masterpiece.
With a 2016 Yamaha XSR900 for his daily commute, Mike had the luxury of time to dedicate to his passion project. The GS550, in its initial state, was a far cry from the sleek machine it would become. A comprehensive overhaul was in order, starting with a complete rebuild of the inline-four engine. New gaskets, piston rings, and valve adjustments breathed new life into the heart of the motorcycle. To enhance airflow, Mike replaced the stock airbox with individual pod filters.
The custom GS550 boasts a striking array of carbon fiber components, meticulously crafted in-house. From the sleek tail section to the minimalist headlight mask, every detail exudes a sense of refined elegance. The bike’s lightweight nature and aggressive stance are further enhanced by the carbon fiber swingarm-mounted license plate holder, stylish fork sleeves, and a new filler cap cover. The only remaining stock bodywork is the fuel tank, a testament to the extensive customization undertaken on this remarkable project.
The carbon fiber components not only contribute to the bike’s aesthetic appeal but also enhance its performance. The lightweight nature of carbon fiber reduces the weight of the bike, improving acceleration and handling. Additionally, the material’s strength and rigidity provide a solid foundation for the bike’s chassis, ensuring precise and responsive steering.

A Cognito Moto billet aluminum top clamp anchors the setup, while aftermarket clip-ons with CRG bar-end mirrors provide a modern touch. Unlike many custom builds, Mike Mitchum opted to retain the original twin dials, adding a touch of nostalgia. LED lighting illuminates the path ahead, complemented by CNC-machined rearsets.
Beneath the surface, a modern heart beats within the vintage Suzuki. A Bluetooth-enabled Motogadget control unit manages the electrical system, aided by an Antigravity battery and a Dynatek electronic ignition. The wiring is neatly organized in a handmade metal tray beneath the seat, showcasing meticulous attention to detail. While the stock suspension and brakes remain, they’ve been thoroughly overhauled to ensure optimal performance.
To enhance traction, Mike fitted the freshly revamped wheels with Continental rubber, both front and rear. Even the chain guard is a testament to his passion, crafted from a combination of metal and carbon fiber. The paintwork is equally impressive, with the frame and swingarm coated in a vibrant red powder coat.
This color scheme is echoed on the front wheel hub, brake caliper, and rear drum, while black accents on the rims and fork lowers add a touch of contrast. The fuel tank livery is a standout feature, featuring a silver base with intricate black and red detailing. Kanji script graphics adorn the tank, paying homage to the motorcycle’s nickname, which translates to “carbon” in Japanese.
