Toyota, renowned for its SUVs and crossovers, is planning to broaden its lineup with new models that don’t have high ground clearances. One such model could be a revived Starlet. Currently sold as rebadged Suzuki models in South Africa, the Starlet is rumored to be getting its Toyota branded version in 2026.

Based on recent reports, the new Starlet is expected to utilize the TNGA-B platform, which underpins models like the Yaris, Aygo X, Aqua, and Lexus LBX. To differentiate itself from the Yaris, the Starlet is rumored to be slightly smaller. It’s anticipated to launch as a five-door hatchback with a total length of around 3,850 mm (151.6 inches), placing it between the Aygo X and the Yaris in terms of size.

In addition to the standard model, Toyota is developing a performance focused GR Starlet. This variant will likely feature a dedicated body kit with larger bumpers, fatter side skirts, and perhaps a rear wing adorned with GR logos and special wheels. A dedicated chassis setup, uprated brakes, and a powerful engine are also expected to make the GR Starlet a compelling option for those seeking a sporty hatchback.

The upcoming Toyota GR Starlet is set to be a lightweight, front wheel drive warm hatch powered by a detuned version of the 1.6-liter three cylinder engine found in the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. With a projected weight of around 2,160 pounds and a six-speed manual transmission, the GR Starlet promises to be a fun and engaging driving experience. While the standard model is expected to debut in 2026, a rally spec version is also in development to compete in the WRC Rally 4 category for two wheel drive vehicles.

As anticipation for the new Starlet grows, digital artists have begun to envision what it might look like. Theottle recently released a couple of renderings that offer a look into the potential design of this exciting new model. One of the renderings from Theottle showcases the GR Starlet in a sleek and sporty body style that is reminiscent of the GR Yaris and GR Corolla.

The car features aggressive styling cues such as a large front grille, flared fenders, and a rear diffuser. The rendering also shows a rear wing that adds to the car’s sporty appearance. Another rendering from Theottle depicts the GR Starlet in a more understated design. This version of the car features a more subtle front grille and smaller side skirts.

The rendering also shows a smaller rear wing that gives the car a more refined look. While these renderings provide a look into the potential design of the GR Starlet, the final design of the car remains to be seen. However, the GR Starlet is shaping up to be a highly anticipated model that is sure to appeal to driving enthusiasts.
