Mercedes-AMG is gearing up to launch its latest high-performance model, the CLE 63. Recent spy shots have revealed two camouflaged prototypes undergoing rigorous testing at a racetrack.
These prototypes showcase the 63 specific styling elements, including distinctive front and rear bumpers, a quad exhaust setup, and the iconic Panamericana grille. Unlike its less powerful siblings, the CLE 63 is expected to feature a hybridized V8 engine instead of a four cylinder or six cylinder unit.
This powerful engine will provide a thrilling driving experience. While the exact engine details remain under wraps, it’s likely that AMG will utilize a twin-turbo V8 from the M177/M178 family.
The prototypes spotted on the track feature slightly different wheel designs but share the same aggressive styling cues. Additionally, there’s no charging flap visible, suggesting that the CLE 63 might not offer plug-in hybrid technology. However, it will likely benefit from EQ Boost mild-hybrid technology, which enhances performance and efficiency.
The AMG CLE 63, anticipated to make its debut in late 2024 or early 2025, is poised to feature the same M178 engine as its SL 63 counterpart. This formidable powerplant delivers an impressive 577 mechanical horsepower at 5,500 rpm and a substantial 590 pound-feet of torque at 2,500 rpm. With the addition of 23 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of near-instant torque, the CLE 63 promises exhilarating performance.
However, its weight, attributed to the 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system, may potentially compromise its handling at the limits of its capabilities. Despite this potential drawback, the 4MATIC+ system is expected to provide enhanced corner entry and exit characteristics, contributing to a more dynamic driving experience.
The CLE 63 comes equipped with 20-inch wheels wrapped in 295/30 and 265/35 Pilot Sport 4 S tires, a configuration that mirrors the CLE 53. This choice of tires, renowned for their performance characteristics, further reinforces the CLE 63’s potential for delivering an engaging and spirited driving experience.
