Subaru has officially launched the current WRX without plans to introduce a high-performance STI variant, creating a wave of speculation about the future of the STI badge. Despite the lack of a dedicated STI model, Subaru is borrowing some design elements from STI for its new offerings.
One of the latest releases is the WRX Todoroki, which will be available in New Zealand. This model features a prominent rear wing, Recaro seats, and the signature WR Blue exterior, yet notably does not carry the STI badge.
The WRX Todoroki stands out by reintroducing the six-speed manual transmission to the New Zealand market, a feature that was previously unavailable. Equipped with an array of performance upgrades typically associated with the STI lineage, this model maintains a unique identity by omitting the STI branding.
Performance-wise, the Todoroki boasts impressive mechanical enhancements, including six-piston front and two-piston rear Brembo brake calipers paired with ventilated and drilled discs, ensuring robust stopping power.
Subaru has also refined the car’s steering and suspension, optimizing the springs and dampers for improved handling. The car is fitted with striking matte gray 19-inch wheels, shod with Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires, providing both aesthetic appeal and enhanced grip.
For those eager to own the Todoroki, pre-orders are currently open, with Subaru planning to produce only 10 units. The starting price is AUD$64,990 (approximately $43,951 based on current exchange rates). Buyers will receive an exclusive STI watch as a commemorative item, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the WRX. However, despite these features and the celebratory nature of the release, the absence of a true WRX STI continues to be felt by enthusiasts.
In the United States, the closest option to an STI remains the WRX tS, which offers sporty enhancements similar to the Todoroki. However, like its New Zealand counterpart, the tS does not reach the full potential of a dedicated STI model.
The previous-generation STI model boasted an impressive 341 horsepower, while the WRX tS maintains the same turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in all WRX variants, delivering a respectable 271 horsepower. Although capable, it falls short of the exhilarating performance that fans of the STI brand have come to expect.
