Rudi Klein’s Los Angeles junkyard stands out as a remarkable collection site for automotive enthusiasts, boasting a unique array of rare and historically significant vehicles. After decades of gathering these treasures, Klein’s collection is now set to be auctioned off by RM Sotheby’s. This junkyard, often overlooked as a source of high-value automobiles, is about to become a hotspot for collectors eager to acquire pieces of automotive heritage.
The variety within the collection is impressive, featuring an extensive lineup of vintage cars, particularly from prestigious brands such as Porsche and Ferrari. The yard is brimming with numerous Porsches, including models like the 356 and 911, as well as a selection of air-cooled engines available in both four- and six-cylinder configurations. Additionally, several Ferrari models are included, such as the 330 GTCs and a 275 GTS, presenting exciting restoration opportunities for Ferrari enthusiasts.
Among the collection’s highlights are several rare Mercedes-Benz models that are sure to attract attention. A notable entry is a largely complete 1957 300 SL Roadster, one of only 30 examples featuring the desirable Rudge wheels, with an auction estimate of up to $1 million.
Also featured is a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Alloy Gullwing, distinguished by its lightweight construction and previously owned by Le Mans champion Luigi Chinetti. This Gullwing, which remains unrestored, is valued at approximately $5 million, making it a highly sought-after item despite its faded original black paint.
Adding to the collection’s prestige is a remarkable prewar vehicle: a 1935 Mercedes 500 K, originally crafted as a unique two-seat model for renowned driver Rudolf Caracciola. Klein acquired this car in 1979, and it has not been publicly displayed since 1980. A former standout at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, it won best in the show in 1977, and its rich history could propel it to outsell the Alloy Gullwing during the auction.
The auction for the Rudi Klein Collection is scheduled for October 26, with a preview set for the 25th.
