The Jeep Grand Cherokee L, once available with a powerful V8 engine, has now been quietly retired by Stellantis. This unexpected move leaves the V6 as the sole powertrain option for this popular SUV.
While it may seem surprising, this decision aligns with Jeep’s recent removal of the V8 option from other models like the Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer, and the non-L version of the Grand Cherokee.
A quick visit to Jeep’s US website confirms this change. All trims of the 2024 Grand Cherokee L, from the Laredo to the Summit Reserve, are now exclusively equipped with the 3.6L V6 engine. This engine produces 293 horsepower, compared to the 357 horsepower offered by the previous V8.
Consequently, the maximum towing capacity has been reduced from 7,200 pounds to 6,200 pounds. To address this, Jeep is expected to introduce an electrified powertrain to the Grand Cherokee L, similar to the one found in the two-row Grand Cherokee. This hybrid option will offer 375 horsepower and a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee L, once a vehicle synonymous with V8 power, has undergone a significant transformation for the 2024 model year. The decision to discontinue the V8 engine was primarily driven by underwhelming sales figures, with less than 4% of Grand Cherokee L sales attributable to the V8 variant in the previous year.
This strategic shift aligns with broader industry trends towards more fuel-efficient and environmentally conscious powertrains. While the V8 is no longer an option, the Grand Cherokee L still offers a compelling range of trims and features. The lineup includes the base Laredo X, the mid-range Altitude and Altitude X, the luxurious Limited and Overland, and the top of the line Summit and Summit Reserve.
Prices for the 2024 model year start at $40,035 for the Laredo X and climb to $67,040 for the Summit Reserve. All wheel drive is now standard on the Summit, Summit Reserve, and Overland trims, providing enhanced traction and stability in various driving conditions.
For the lower-tier models, all wheel drive is available as an optional upgrade, allowing buyers to tailor their vehicle to their specific needs and preferences. Despite the absence of the V8, the Grand Cherokee L remains a capable and versatile SUV, offering a blend of comfort, luxury, and off-road prowess. Its modern design, advanced technology features, and spacious interior make it a compelling choice for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
