Subaru New Zealand has revealed a limited edition WRX, the Todoroki, to commemorate 30 years of World Rally eXperimental. This special edition, of which only 10 examples will be available, is set to arrive in the country next month.
While the announcement might seem confusing given that Subaru launched the Impreza WRX in 1992, it’s important to note that the Todoroki is a unique take on the modern WRX, inspired by the legendary Subaru Tecnica International (STI) models of the past.
Unfortunately, Subaru has confirmed that there will be no STI version of the VB-series WRX. This is a disappointment for many fans who have come to expect the high-performance STI variant from every new generation of WRX.
The company has stated that the STI will not be developed on the current WRX platform, which is a bit of a departure from the trend of using the Subaru Global Platform for most of its combustion-engined models.
The only exceptions to this rule are the rear drive BRZ and the all-electric Solterra, which are based on different platforms. Despite the lack of an official STI badge, the Todoroki offers a look at what a modern WRX STI could be. With its aggressive styling, including a large rear wing, the Todoroki is a tribute to the iconic WRX STIs of the past.
While it may not have the same level of performance as a true STI, it still offers a unique and exciting driving experience. The Subaru WRX Todoroki, a limited-edition variant of the popular sports sedan, offers a unique blend of performance and exclusivity. Named after the Japanese word for “roar,” the Todoroki showcases a striking WR Blue exterior and a powerful manual transmission.
While WRX sales have been declining in recent years, Todoroki’s special features, such as Recaro seats, Brembo brakes, and Bridgestone Potenza tires, make it a highly desirable option for enthusiasts. Despite its high price tag, the Todoroki’s limited production run and inclusion of an STI watch add to its appeal.
However, the lack of an STI upgrade for the VB-series WRX, coupled with the ongoing decline in sales, raises questions about Subaru’s plans for this iconic model. One of the most notable features of the Todoroki is its manual transmission, a rarity in today’s market where automatic transmissions have become increasingly prevalent.
This manual gearbox not only enhances the driving experience but also caters to a specific group of enthusiasts who prefer the tactile engagement and control that a manual transmission offers. The Todoroki also boasts a range of other performance enhancing features, including Brembo brakes, a tuned suspension, and Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires, all of which contribute to its exceptional handling and braking capabilities.
In addition to its mechanical upgrades, the Todoroki also stands out from the standard WRX with its exclusive exterior styling. The WR Blue paint job, in particular, is a nod to Subaru’s racing heritage and adds a touch of visual flair. The Todoroki also features a distinctive rear wing, which enhances both aerodynamics and visual appeal.
While the Todoroki offers a compelling package for those seeking a high performance sports sedan, the ongoing decline in WRX sales raises concerns about Subaru’s ability to sustain its position in the competitive market.
The lack of an STI upgrade for the VB series WRX, in particular, is a missed opportunity to further differentiate the model and attract a wider audience. Despite these challenges, the Todoroki remains a testament to Subaru’s commitment to performance and innovation.
Its limited production run and exclusive features make it a highly sought-after vehicle for enthusiasts. However, the future of the WRX remains uncertain, and it remains to be seen whether Subaru will be able to revitalize the model and regain its former popularity.
