Restomods are a great way to bring classic car designs back to life with modern technology, and S Klub has done exactly that with one of the most beautiful sports cars ever—the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing.
In a recent video by Shawn Davies from the Autopia LA YouTube channel, we get a closer look at a remarkable 300SL Gullwing restomod powered by an AMG engine and worth over $1 million. It’s a stunning blend of vintage style and modern performance.
Why S Klub’s 300SL Gullwing Restomod Costs Over $1 Million
S Klub is known for building high-end custom cars for major shows like SEMA and private clients. The shop has grown rapidly, expanding from a small team working on a single vehicle to a 12-man crew managing multiple projects at once.
One of their latest creations is a wide-body 300SL Gullwing replica that’s built on a modern Mercedes-AMG SLK55 chassis.
The body of this 300SL restomod was molded from an original 300SL Gullwing that had only 7,000 miles on it and had been fully restored by Mercedes-Benz in 1979 before being stored in a museum.
Using this near-perfect example, S Klub created an accurate yet updated version of the classic car. They added a flared wide-body design, giving it a more aggressive, modern look.
Modern Performance in a Classic Shape
Rather than using the original 300SL Gullwing’s chassis, S Klub opted for the more fitting chassis from the second-generation Mercedes SLK55 AMG.
Under the hood, this restomod boasts a 5.4-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine that delivers 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque.
The powertrain is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, making the car easy to drive. With an upgraded suspension, heavy-duty Brembo brakes, and performance tires, this car is just as capable on the road as it is at car shows.
Modern Comfort Meets Classic Style
Inside, the restomod offers far more comfort than the original 300SL Gullwing. It includes modern features like air conditioning, Bluetooth, leather upholstery, and a high-end sound system. Most of the SLK55’s original gauges are also present.
If a more classic interior is preferred, S Klub can customize it to meet the buyer’s taste. The car is finished in a unique green paint, and S Klub says it’s the only Gullwing they’ll build in that color.
The Legacy of the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwin
The original 300SL Gullwing was born from Mercedes-Benz’s W194 race car in the early 1950s.
Its distinctive design, particularly the iconic gullwing doors, and status as the fastest car of its time made it an instant legend. Today, original 300SL Gullwings are highly prized by collectors, often fetching millions at auctions.
S Klub’s 300SL Gullwing restomod perfectly combines the classic appeal of the original car with the benefits of modern technology.
It’s a car that not only looks incredible but also offers the reliability and performance needed to be driven every day.
