Jay Leno, the iconic comedian and car enthusiast, once dreamed of owning a classic British sports car. His dream became a reality when he acquired a 1970 MGB GT convertible, a vehicle that continues to evoke fond memories. Now, as the host of “Jay Leno’s Garage,” he’s taken his passion for automotive excellence to new heights, recently driving a stunning restomod based on the MGB GT.
The LE60, as it’s now known, is a testament to the fusion of classic design and modern performance. Under the guidance of Tim Fenna, founder of Frontline Cars, the team meticulously rebuilt the original Rover V8 engine, replacing the cylinder heads, rockers, and cams.
The result is a potent 292-cubic-inch (4.8-liter) V8 capable of delivering 375 horsepower and 312 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a five-speed Tremec TKO transmission, this powerplant propels the lightweight MGB GT from 0 to 60 mph in a blistering 3.6 seconds and onto a top speed of 160 mph.
To handle the newfound power, Frontline Cars widened the front and rear fenders to accommodate wider tires, ensuring optimal traction. The stock roof remains, adding to the car’s classic charm. This remarkable restomod seamlessly blends the nostalgia of a British sports car icon with the exhilarating performance of a modern supercar.
Frontline Cars has breathed new life into the classic MGB GT, transforming it into a modern marvel while retaining its vintage charm. The restomod features a meticulously engineered suspension system, comprising a double-wishbone setup at the front and a multi-link configuration with Frontline coilover telescopic dampers at the rear. To enhance performance and handling, a limited-slip Quaife differential with upgraded components has been incorporated.
Customers can either send their own MGB GT to the UK or collaborate with Frontline Cars to source a suitable vehicle, which is then shipped across the Atlantic for the extensive modification process. Months later, the reborn classic is returned to its owner, a world apart from its original form.
Jay Leno, a renowned automotive enthusiast, is particularly fond of the MGB GT’s rear end, with its curvaceous tailgate, distinctive vertical taillights, and perfectly proportioned exhaust pipe. The car’s dual fuel filler caps add a touch of convenience, allowing for easy refueling regardless of the parking position.
The interior features handcrafted bucket seats, tailored to each owner’s specific preferences. While retaining the original 1970 MGB GT’s aesthetic, Frontline Cars has incorporated modern amenities such as power steering, power windows, and a redesigned instrument cluster.
The cooling system has been ingeniously engineered to eliminate the need for a hood scoop, preserving the car’s sleek silhouette. However, for those who desire a more aggressive look, a bespoke hood scoop and wire wheels with 72 spokes can be added. The restomod rides on 16-inch Dunlop-style alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires.
To cater to modern driving preferences, some customers opt for additional features like a reverse camera with a dashboard display, a heated windscreen, and heated seats. Jay Leno, experiencing the restomod firsthand, praises the brown leather seats for their retro appeal. With a limited production run of just 30 units, these meticulously crafted restomods offer a unique blend of classic style and contemporary performance.
