The belief that you can’t improve on a classic is a bit of a myth. Let’s face it—by today’s standards, classic cars often fall short in key areas beyond styling.

They typically lack precision handling, braking performance is often inadequate, and steering can feel vague. But there’s no denying their style outshines the sometimes uninspired, plastic-heavy designs of modern vehicles.

Imagine if you could retain that vintage look and feel while incorporating modern performance, handling, and safety features. Hot-rodders have been doing this for years, and now, several companies offer turn-key modern vehicles inspired by classic designs.

One standout is Gateway Bronco in St. Louis, which specializes in Bronco-inspired SUVs. They offer an array of options, from rebuilt and restomodded vintage Broncos to entirely new, aftermarket builds with steel and carbon-fiber bodies, all set on new Kincer Engineering chassis.

Every Gateway Bronco model is crafted in their 60,000-square-foot facility in Hamel, Illinois, about 35 miles from St. Louis.

They provide ready-made packages but can also customize almost any detail, offering options like custom colors, interiors, and features. You can even opt for a four-door Bronco or an electric-powered model if that’s your preference.

Gateway’s engine options range from classic, almost-stock V-8s (their “Fuelie Edition”) to models featuring a modern supercharged Coyote engine.

We test-drove one of their top LUXE-GT editions, powered by a 5.0-liter Coyote engine paired with a modern 10-speed automatic transmission, though manual transmissions are also available. True to the Bronco heritage, this model includes full-time AWD.

This LUXE-GT model was equipped with modern amenities like anti-lock brakes (ABS), and extras like soft-close doors, 18-inch sport wheels, a backup camera, LED lighting, and an impressive audio system.

This edition rides on a fully independent front suspension set on a high-performance Kincer Engineering chassis, which is more than 100 percent stiffer than a factory chassis.

The reinforced body also contributes to a “new truck” driving feel, especially with modern braking, stability control, and electronic power steering.

Inside, our LUXE-GT featured marine-grade vinyl flooring, a Dakota Digital gauge package, and a Bluetooth/CarPlay-compatible audio system.

The seats were comfortable, and the interior struck a balance between vintage charm and updated features. For example, the electric parking brake switch is positioned to the left of the gauge cluster, and the classic side mirrors even feature integrated turn signal lights.

While driving along the Southern California coast, we had a soft-shade top, but Gateway offers a variety of top options, including fully removable hardtops, all detailed on their website.

So how does the Gateway LUXE-GT Bronco drive? It feels like a modern SUV, boosted by the 460-horsepower Coyote engine.

Steering is precise, letting you enjoy a few curves, while the brakes deliver excellent performance, making you forget you’re in a high-clearance SUV with large, knobby tires.

The ABS system operates seamlessly, and the 10-speed transmission keeps the engine running smoothly. The full-time AWD tackled rough patches of road with ease, and the handling is exceptional for a lifted Bronco.

Build quality is outstanding, and wind buffeting with the soft top was minimal—though we’d love to test the hardtop version.

Special mention goes to the soft-close doors and the power windows, cleverly disguised with traditional-looking window crank switches. It’s these small details that enhance the cool factor.

We also got a teaser drive in Gateway’s upcoming Shelby Sport SUV, a LUXE-GT cranked up to the extreme. This model features a 5.2-liter Predator V-8, delivering a supercharged 760 horsepower, and a five-speed manual transmission.

Only 10 units of this carbon-fiber powerhouse will be made each year, and we had the chance to test the prototype. Look out for that review soon!
