Hybrids, while not as common as traditional combustion engines, have steadily evolved over the past 25 years, largely thanks to early pioneers like the Toyota Prius. Initially, the automotive industry was slow to embrace this technology, but by the late 2000s and early 2010s, hybridization gained traction in competitive arenas like Formula 1 and Le Mans. This adoption not only boosted performance and reduced emissions but also attracted more manufacturers to the sport.
In the last decade, brands eager to improve their image and balance performance with sustainability have incorporated hybrid powertrains into sports cars, though mostly at the high end of the market.
Hybrid supercars like the Porsche 918 Spyder pushed the limits of performance, boasting impressive specs—887 hp and a blistering 0-60 mph time of 2.6 seconds—marking hybrids as capable competitors in a performance-driven market. Yet, affordability remains a challenge, especially in sports cars, where high-performance hybrids typically come at a premium.
One surprising exception in the 2024 market, however, is the 2015 BMW i8. Initially priced at $135,000, this sports hybrid now sells for a fraction of that cost in the used car market. With its unique butterfly doors and futuristic design, the i8 was BMW’s ambitious foray into sustainable luxury sports cars.
Powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine paired with an eDrive electric motor, it produces a respectable 369 hp and achieves a 0-60 mph time of 4.2 seconds. Despite its underwhelming engine size compared to V8-equipped rivals at its launch, the i8 holds up well today, particularly for enthusiasts looking for a hybrid sports car under $50,000.
The Lexus LC500h also offers a similar blend of luxury and performance, with the 2018 model providing a comfortable 354 hp. Although its hybrid V6 is overshadowed by the 5.0-liter V8 in the LC500’s base trim, it still delivers a sleek, high-quality experience at a more affordable price point in today’s used market.
Both the i8 and LC500h demonstrate that while hybrid sports cars typically come with a higher price tag, their technology and performance are more accessible than ever in the used market.
