At this year’s SEMA, Toyota is showcasing its adventurous spirit with the new ’80s-inspired TRD Surf Concept SUV, built on the foundation of the 2025 Toyota 4Runner. This concept pays homage to the removable-top first-generation 4Runner, which became iconic in So-Cal’s surfer culture.
Marty Schwerter, the director of operations at the Toyota Motorsports Technical Center, emphasized the goal of recapturing nostalgia while providing modern functionality. The removable top is designed to be as practical as it is stylish, enhancing the overall experience of driving this retro-inspired SUV.
The TRD Surf Concept features a 2.4-liter turbo inline-4 engine, delivering 278 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. This power is sent to all four wheels, ensuring robust off-road capabilities. To enhance its performance, the concept includes a custom exhaust that offers a more engaging sound and a specially designed suspension system with upgraded steering and durable aluminum components.
Wider and more aggressive than the standard 4Runner, the TRD Surf Concept is four inches broader and fitted with 37-inch tires that are ready for beach adventures. The interior has been redesigned for water resistance and features a “Travel Quiver” designed to securely hold surfboards, making it an ideal companion for surf enthusiasts.
Toyota invites attendees to get an up-close look at the TRD Surf Concept at their booth during the 2024 SEMA show, taking place from November 5-8 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. This concept not only reflects Toyota’s commitment to adventure but also honors the brand’s rich history in the SUV segment.
