Toyota showcased its newest off-road concept, the RAV-X, at the 2024 SEMA show in Las Vegas, based on the 2024 RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid. The RAV-X is inspired by the rugged, race-ready vehicles competing in the Dakar Rally, and Toyota intends for this concept to appeal to off-road enthusiasts. Following the successful adaptation of the Toyota 4Runner and Land Cruiser into off-road concepts, Toyota has now set its sights on the RAV4, transforming it into a highly capable, off-road-focused prototype. Designed to demonstrate the potential of the RAV4 platform, the RAV-X brings a fresh, motorsports-inspired look to Toyota’s SUV lineup.

Developed by Toyota’s Service Parts and Accessories Development (SPAD) team, the RAV-X concept features extensive upgrades specifically tailored for off-road performance. The SPAD team handled every stage of the build, from initial sketches to CAD design and 3D-printed components, aiming to create a “halo” vehicle for the RAV4 family. This comprehensive approach has resulted in a vehicle that combines both aesthetic and functional upgrades, pushing the limits of what the RAV4 can do off-road. The concept stands as a testament to Toyota’s commitment to exploring new off-road possibilities for even its more mainstream models.

Key among the RAV-X’s modifications is a thoroughly enhanced suspension system. The SPAD team installed a long-travel suspension, raising the SUV’s ride height by two inches and widening its track by 6.3 inches compared to the standard RAV4. The setup includes custom 2.5-inch Fox internal bypass dampers, allowing dual-speed compression adjustments. To further optimize off-road performance, Toyota added external oil reservoirs to the dampers, forged aluminum lower control arms, and rear upper supports, giving the RAV-X enhanced stability and resilience on rough terrain.

While the RAV-X keeps the stock RAV4 Prime’s powertrain—a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with three electric motors and a CVT—Toyota suggests it has a slight power boost over the original model, which already delivers 302 horsepower. Skid plates were added to protect the powertrain from the rough off-road environment, while the raised rocker panels increased ground clearance. The SUV is outfitted with protective features that highlight its off-road intentions, ensuring that the RAV-X is not only powerful but also prepared to handle challenging landscapes.

The RAV-X’s design is further enhanced with visual cues reminiscent of Dakar rally vehicles, such as a modified front bumper with large cooling ducts, integrated LED lights, and red tow hooks. The concept features widened fenders, hood vents for added cooling, red mud flaps, and a rear spoiler, giving it an aggressive, rally-ready look. A unique rear bumper with a high-clearance dual exhaust, white 17-inch forged aluminum wheels, and rugged 265/65R-17 tires complete the look. Although production seems unlikely, the RAV-X concept exemplifies Toyota’s innovative vision for an off-road-ready RAV4, potentially setting the stage for a future rugged RAV4 variant.
