The BBC has introduced its new in-car app, allowing drivers to easily access music, radio, and podcasts directly through their car’s entertainment system. Prior to this innovation, drivers had to connect their phones via Android Auto or Apple CarPlay to listen to BBC content. The new app eliminates the need for a phone, making the listening experience more seamless. For the first time, BBC Sounds is available directly from the car’s display, enhancing the driving experience with effortless access to a wide range of BBC programming.
Exclusive Availability for BMW and MINI Vehicles Initially
Currently, the BBC Sounds in-car app is being rolled out to select BMW and MINI vehicles. To use the app, these vehicles must be equipped with the BMW Operating System 9 or MINI Operating System 9. This initial launch is exclusive to these car models, but the BBC plans to expand the availability to other car brands in the future. The app is designed specifically for displays powered by Android Automotive, ensuring compatibility with newer car models and better integration with the vehicle’s systems. Drivers can check compatibility on a provided list to see if their car can support the new app.

Once drivers sign in to the BBC Sounds in-car app, they can enjoy a personalized experience. The app synchronizes the playback history across devices, allowing listeners to continue content from where they left off. For example, if a driver starts a podcast on their phone, they can pick up right where they stopped once they get in the car. This continuity offers convenience, especially for those who listen to long-running series or podcasts during their commute. The personalization extends beyond syncing playback; the app provides recommendations for new shows or music mixes based on the listener’s preferences.
Live Radio Options with More Control Over Playback
The in-car BBC Sounds app also offers enhanced control over live radio, allowing drivers to pause, rewind or resume shows such as “The News Quiz” whenever interruptions occur. This feature is particularly useful when drivers need to pause the broadcast, such as when receiving a phone call, and then easily pick up where they left off. Additionally, drivers can find previously bookmarked content from other devices and resume listening without hassle. This flexibility ensures a smoother and more enjoyable listening experience, whether catching up on news or enjoying entertainment during a drive.
While the BBC Sounds in-car app is initially available in newer BMW and MINI vehicles, drivers still have other ways to access BBC content. They can connect their phones via Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or Bluetooth, all of which continue to be supported. The in-car app will be accessible through the vehicle’s Appstore, which requires a data subscription such as BMW Digital Premium or MINI Connected Package. With continued updates and future expansions, the BBC aims to improve the overall in-car entertainment experience, ensuring that drivers can enjoy their favorite BBC content with even more ease and convenience.
