Ferrari is preparing to launch its first electric vehicle this year, but Lamborghini is in no hurry to follow suit.

Instead, the iconic brand is taking a more measured approach, with its first EV not expected until the latter part of the decade. However, when it does arrive, it is shaping up to be an absolute powerhouse—potentially outshining Ferrari’s EV by a wide margin.

If recent reports prove accurate, the transition to electric will not put an end to the ongoing horsepower rivalry.

Lamborghini’s first EV will be inspired by the 2023 Lanzador concept. Speaking at Volkswagen Group’s annual media conference, CEO Oliver Blume confirmed that the vehicle will be developed on a newly engineered platform that will be shared across Porsche, Audi, Bentley, and Lamborghini models.

Blume revealed that this platform “will allow for up to 2,000 hp and 980 volts,” adding that it will be “a very specific set-up for Lamborghini.”

If the brand’s first EV delivers anywhere near that level of power, it would place it in the same elite category as the Pininfarina Battista and Rimac Nevera, falling just behind the Koenigsegg Gemera as one of the world’s most powerful production vehicles.

However, while the platform may support up to 2,000 hp, it would be surprising if Lamborghini’s first EV launched with that much power, at least in its base configuration—especially if it adopts the high-riding crossover format of the Lanzador.

Nonetheless, Lamborghini is clearly aiming to make a bold statement with its first electric vehicle.

When revealing the Lanzador concept at Monterey Car Week in 2023, the company highlighted a one-megawatt output—equivalent to 1,341 hp—which would still be an astonishing figure for an electric Lamborghini.

The inclusion of a 980-volt electrical architecture is another exciting prospect.

While most high-performance EVs currently operate on an 800-volt system, a few models from China have surpassed the 900-volt threshold, and the newly released Lucid Gravity features a class-leading 926-volt architecture, allowing for rapid charging and extended range.

Blume also confirmed in an interview that Lamborghini’s fourth model will be manufactured in Italy, though he did not disclose details about the source of its powertrain.

However, he reassured enthusiasts that it will be “a typical Lamborghini, something very emotional.”

If the brand’s history serves as any indication, this means it will be dramatic, bold, and blisteringly fast—ensuring Lamborghini’s reputation remains intact, even in the absence of a roaring V12 engine.
