The refreshed Mercedes-Benz S-Class isn’t just getting a cosmetic update, Mercedes has confirmed it will receive a new flat-plane crank V8 engine.

The extensively updated Mercedes-Benz S-Class is set for its world premiere later this month. The automaker says the facelift represents “the most ambitious launch program in Mercedes-Benz history.” For buyers with deep pockets, that’s good news, and some nations may even see one of these S-Classes replace current presidential cars.

The vehicle has been partially previewed in camouflage as a luxury autonomous taxi aimed at the Middle East. Naturally, buyers can expect revised styling, an updated interior, and more technology than ever. But what caught enthusiasts off guard is the news of a new engine option.

Currently, most S-Class models rely on a turbocharged inline-six. In the U.S., the S580 still gets a twin-turbo V8, delivering a healthy 496 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque.

But Mercedes is replacing that engine with a different V8, derived directly from the S63. That means even a “standard” S-Class will now get a raspy flat-plane crank V8. It’s not exactly what you’d expect from the usual S-Class, but it’s certainly welcome news.

The 4.0-liter biturbo V8 in the new S580 isn’t entirely new. Internally called the M177, it debuted in the previous-generation C63 back in 2015 and has since been used across other AMG models as well as some Aston Martin cars.

Installing it in the standard S-Class may be Mercedes-Benz’s way of making amends for the four-cylinder C63, though we wouldn’t complain about seeing the M177 back there as well.

The switch to a flat-plane V8 was driven by a desire for more power and lower emissions. Another bonus, of course, is the engine’s higher-pitched, more refined exhaust note. Mercedes-Benz also told the publication that the S580’s V8 output will now reach 530 hp.
