The current-generation Acura RDX is entering a production pause, and while a sleeker hybrid model is on the horizon, buyers will have to wait a few years before it hits showrooms.

The Acura RDX is heading into a hiatus, setting the stage for a sharper, more modern return. Honda has confirmed that production of the current-generation RDX will conclude later this year. A new model is planned, though it won’t reach dealerships for at least a couple of years, and when it does, it will feature Acura’s first twin-motor hybrid system.

Acura released a single teaser image of the fourth-generation RDX during a recent press briefing. While the image reveals little, it hints that the new model will adopt a distinctive, slightly sleeker silhouette compared with the outgoing RDX.

Despite the shadows in the teaser, some design cues are noticeable: slim LED headlights, broad rear haunches, and a prominent roof spoiler extending over the back glass.

Acura did not provide a specific release date, only stating that the new RDX will arrive at dealerships within the next “couple of years.” The company also did not explain the two-year-plus gap between ending current RDX production and launching the successor.

The automaker did note that the production pause was planned in advance, citing supplier constraints as a key factor. Several components for the current RDX are no longer available from existing suppliers, making continued production untenable.

“For nearly two decades, RDX has been one of the most popular Acura models, so it’s fitting that the upcoming fourth-generation RDX will be the first Acura to feature our two-motor hybrid-electric system,” said Mike Langel, assistant vice president of Acura National Sales.

“The RDX hybrid is expected to arrive at dealerships within the next couple of years, and we’re thrilled to share this news as Acura celebrates its 40th anniversary, making this milestone even more special.”

Although Acura has yet to launch a hybrid of its own, Honda brings extensive experience with the technology. Its fourth-generation twin-motor hybrid system is already in use across the CR-V, Accord, and Civic.

The system uses one electric motor as a generator for the hybrid battery pack and a second motor to drive the wheels directly. A compact 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine complements the setup, either charging the battery or sending torque to the wheels via a lockup clutch.
