Nearly 84,000 recent Genesis vehicles are being recalled due to malfunctioning instrument clusters, a problem that has persisted for more than a year.

The rise of digital dashboards has delivered clear advantages, allowing automakers to present drivers with far more information than traditional analog gauges ever could, from navigation prompts to detailed efficiency data. However, a newly announced recall from Hyundai Motor Group highlights the downsides that can come with this shift toward fully digital systems.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Hyundai is recalling a large number of Genesis luxury vehicles from the 2025 and 2026 model years after discovering that their instrument cluster displays can intermittently reboot and go blank while the vehicle is in motion.

When this occurs, the screen may go dark for five to ten seconds, temporarily removing access to critical driving information and increasing the potential risk of a collision. In total, nearly 84,000 vehicles across six different Genesis models are affected.

The NHTSA recall documentation states that the defect causes the affected vehicles to fall short of the requirements outlined in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 101, which governs controls and displays. Altogether, 83,877 vehicles are included in the recall, encompassing the following models:

  • 2025–2026 Genesis G80
  • 2026 Genesis G80 Electrified
  • 2026 Genesis GV60
  • 2026 Genesis GV70
  • 2026 Genesis GV70 Electrified
  • 2025–2026 Genesis GV80

While recalls issued by Hyundai Motor Group often span multiple brands, this particular issue is limited exclusively to Genesis vehicles. The problem, which was formally identified earlier this month, was traced back to the vehicles’ head unit and integrated display system.

Specifically, both HD radio data and analog radio data are being written to the same memory storage location because of overlapping software routines. This conflict can trigger a data overwrite error, disrupting communication between the system and the instrument cluster. When output signals are interrupted, the display may reboot entirely.

As of the time the report was filed, Hyundai had logged 237 related reports dating back to September 2024, though no crashes connected to the issue have been reported in the United States.

Owners can check whether their vehicle is included by entering their VIN on nhtsa.gov. Hyundai expects to have a fix available around the middle of March. Once ready, the remedy will be delivered either through a dealer-installed software update or via an over-the-air update, depending on the vehicle.

Until that update becomes available, Hyundai is advising affected owners to disable the HD radio feature while driving. It’s a notably unusual instruction tied to a recall, though it’s far from the most serious issue Genesis has faced recently.

Just last month, Genesis issued a recall for the G90 after reports that the vehicle could apply the brakes automatically even when no obstacle was present. That issue was ultimately traced to the Highway Driving Assist system falsely detecting objects entering the vehicle’s lane, with the problem appearing most frequently on cars finished in Savile Silver.

In both instances, advanced technology designed to make driving safer and more convenient ended up introducing new complications. Still, at this point, there’s no turning back. Recalls like these, while inconvenient, play a key role in refining systems and improving the next generation of vehicles.
