Cupra has expanded its Australian Leon range with the 2026 Leon VZx Sportstourer, a high-performance wagon that combines more power than the VZx hatchback with a larger cargo area and all-wheel-drive traction.
The new model is due to arrive in September 2026, giving buyers a rare alternative in a market where performance wagons are steadily disappearing.
The VZx Sportstourer is not simply a Leon hatch with a longer roof. It uses a more powerful version of Cupra’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, produces 245 kW, or about 328 horsepower, and sends power through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an all-wheel-drive system.
The VZx hatch uses the same basic engine but makes 221 kW, or about 296 horsepower, and drives only the front wheels.
That gives the wagon a 24 kW advantage over its hatchback sibling while also making it the most powerful Leon Sportstourer offered in Australia. Cupra claims a 0 to 100 km/h time of 4.8 seconds, placing the car in territory normally associated with larger and more expensive performance vehicles.
The VZx Sportstourer will be priced from AU$67,490 before on-road costs, or AU$72,490 drive-away nationally. Orders have opened, with the first customer deliveries expected during the third quarter of 2026.

More Power Than the VZx Hatch
The most important difference between the Leon VZx Sportstourer and the VZx hatch is its drivetrain.
Cupra has fitted the wagon with a 245 kW version of the Volkswagen Group’s 2.0-liter turbocharged EA888 engine. It also produces 420 Nm of torque, allowing the Sportstourer to accelerate with the kind of urgency buyers expect from a modern all-wheel-drive performance car.
The regular VZx hatch is far from slow. Its 221 kW and 400 Nm output give it strong performance, but it sends power only to the front wheels. That layout keeps the hatch lighter and more direct in character, yet it also limits how effectively the car can use its power when accelerating hard out of tight corners or on wet roads.
The Sportstourer’s all-wheel-drive system changes that equation. Cupra says it uses rear torque-splitting technology that can send up to half of the engine’s power to the rear axle. The system can then direct all of that rear-axle power to either rear wheel when needed.
This torque-vectoring ability should help the wagon rotate more cleanly through corners while improving traction on corner exits. It is related to the hardware used in the Volkswagen Golf R and Audi S3, although Cupra has developed its own suspension tuning, steering calibration, styling, and equipment package.
The result is a wagon that should feel more planted and capable than the front-wheel-drive hatch, particularly on fast roads, wet surfaces, and uneven pavement.
A Performance Wagon in a Shrinking Segment
The Leon VZx Sportstourer arrives at a time when performance wagons are becoming increasingly rare.
SUVs have absorbed much of the market once occupied by wagons, even though a well-designed estate car can offer lower weight, better aerodynamics, sharper handling, and easier loading than a comparable crossover.
Cupra is using that gap to position the VZx Sportstourer as a practical alternative for drivers who want performance without moving into an SUV.
The wagon offers 620 liters of cargo capacity with the rear seats in place. That is substantially more than the hatchback and comparable with the luggage space offered by some midsize SUVs.
For buyers with children, pets, sports equipment, or regular highway travel, that extra space is more valuable than it may appear on paper. The Sportstourer can carry luggage, bikes, or bulky household items while retaining the low seating position and driving response of a hot hatch.
Cupra has also included a power tailgate as standard, making the cargo area easier to access when carrying bags or equipment.
The model indirectly fills a space left by the Volkswagen Golf R wagon, which was removed from the Australian market in 2023. The Cupra uses related Volkswagen Group engineering, but its styling and brand positioning give it a different identity.
The Hardware Goes Beyond a Stronger Engine
Cupra has equipped the VZx Sportstourer with more than a power increase and all-wheel drive.
The wagon receives dynamic chassis control, allowing the dampers to adjust their behavior depending on the selected drive mode and road conditions. This gives the driver the ability to choose a more comfortable setting for everyday driving or a firmer setup for more enthusiastic use.
It also receives 19-inch Hailstorm alloy wheels, cross-drilled brakes, and performance-oriented exterior details that distinguish it from the lower-powered Leon Sportstourer versions. The styling remains restrained compared with many performance SUVs, but the wagon’s lower ride height, aggressive wheels, and sharper bodywork make its intent clear.
Inside, Cupra has included heated front seats with memory settings, leather-appointed upholstery, a Sennheiser sound system, and a high level of standard equipment. These features reinforce the car’s role as a long-distance performance vehicle rather than a stripped-out track special.
That balance is central to the Sportstourer’s appeal. It is designed to cover daily commuting, family travel, and long highway drives without demanding the compromises associated with a dedicated sports car.
How It Fits Into the Leon Range
The VZx Sportstourer sits at the top of Cupra’s Australian Leon wagon range. Below it is the Leon VZ Sportstourer, a plug-in hybrid wagon that combines a petrol engine and electric motor for 200 kW.
The VZe offers a different type of appeal, with lower-emission commuting potential and electric-only driving for shorter trips. However, it is heavier and significantly slower, with a claimed 0 to 100 km/h time of 7.3 seconds.

The VZx Sportstourer is aimed at buyers who place performance first. Its 245 kW output, 4.8-second acceleration claim, and all-wheel-drive system make it the more focused driver’s car, even though it is also the more practical wagon.
Cupra’s VZx hatch remains relevant for buyers who want a more compact, front-wheel-drive hot hatch experience. Its 221 kW engine, 400 Nm torque output, and lighter body give it a different personality.
The Sportstourer does not replace the hatch. It gives Cupra a more expensive and more capable option for buyers who need the space of a wagon but do not want to sacrifice performance.
Strong Competition, but Few Direct Rivals
The VZx Sportstourer will enter a small but competitive niche. The Skoda Octavia RS wagon remains one of the closest alternatives in Australia. It offers a practical body, a lower price, and a familiar Volkswagen Group foundation.
However, it uses a 195 kW front-wheel-drive powertrain, making it less powerful than the Cupra and less focused on all-weather performance.
The Audi S3 is another related option, with all-wheel drive and strong performance, but it is more expensive and does not offer the same cargo space. The Volkswagen Golf R is technically related as well, though the wagon body is no longer sold locally.
Buyers could also consider performance SUVs such as the Cupra Formentor VZx, Hyundai Kona N, BMW X1 M35i, or Audi SQ2. Yet none offers the same combination of low wagon proportions, large luggage area, and 245 kW all-wheel-drive powertrain.
That makes the Cupra unusual. It is not trying to compete with every SUV. It is targeting buyers who still see value in a fast, low-slung wagon.
Why the Sportstourer Matters for Cupra
Cupra has built its identity around vehicles that are more expressive and performance-focused than the mainstream Seat models from which the brand emerged.
The Leon VZx Sportstourer continues that approach. It uses familiar Volkswagen Group components, but Cupra has given it sharper styling, a more emotional interior, and a powertrain specification that separates it from the standard Leon range.
The car also gives Cupra an important halo model in Australia. The brand’s SUVs have become central to sales, but a high-performance wagon helps maintain its enthusiast appeal.
That matters as the market shifts toward electric vehicles and crossovers. A fast petrol-powered wagon may not be the highest-volume product, but it gives the brand a distinctive personality at a time when many vehicles are becoming increasingly similar in shape and purpose.
The 2026 Cupra Leon VZx Sportstourer offers more than just extra luggage space over the VZx hatch. It brings a stronger 245 kW turbocharged engine, all-wheel drive, rear torque splitting, a 4.8-second 0 to 100 km/h claim, and 620 liters of cargo capacity.
It will not be the cheapest performance car on sale, and buyers who only need a compact hot hatch may prefer the lighter VZx hatch. But for drivers who want genuine family-car practicality with Golf R-level power and all-weather traction, the new Cupra wagon fills a rare space in the Australian market.
