New Orleans presents a particularly difficult environment for drivers because flooding can develop from intense rainfall, tropical storms, storm surge, and drainage limitations.
The City of New Orleans notes that much of the city is below sea level and that heavy rainfall can cause water to pool because drainage depends heavily on pumping infrastructure. Some low-lying areas can experience significant flooding when rainfall becomes intense.
That makes ground clearance, traction, water-fording capability, and vehicle configuration more relevant than simply choosing the biggest SUV available.
