BMW is adding a financial incentive to its 2027 electric vehicle lineup in the United States, offering eligible buyers and lessees $500 in public charging credits alongside a complimentary year of IONNA membership.
The package, introduced on November 5, 2026, is designed to reduce the cost of public charging while making it easier for owners to access multiple charging networks through the My BMW app.
Rather than providing one unrestricted balance, BMW divides the benefit between its integrated ChargingNetwork and IONNA, the fast-charging network backed by several major automakers.
The promotion arrives as BMW prepares to expand its electric vehicle range and strengthen its charging infrastructure partnerships across the country.
How BMW’s $500 Charging Package Works
On November 5, 2026, BMW of North America introduced a new charging incentive package that includes two separate credits. Customers receive $300 in credit for the BMW Charging Network and an additional $200 that can be used specifically at IONNA charging stations.
Eligible customers also receive a complimentary one-year BMW Membership at IONNA, which provides a 25% discount on qualifying charging sessions during the membership period.
The distinction between the two credits is important because they cannot be used interchangeably. The $300 BMW ChargingNetwork credit is redeemable through more than 15 participating public charging providers.
BMW identifies IONNA, Shell Recharge, ChargePoint, and EVgo among the participating networks. The additional $200 credit is reserved for charging sessions at IONNA locations.
This structure gives customers access to a broader charging network while encouraging them to use IONNA, which BMW helped establish with seven other automakers.
The network is intended to provide high-powered charging locations across the United States, including facilities known as Rechargeries, which are designed to offer amenities beyond charging equipment.
The complimentary IONNA membership adds another financial benefit. Members receive a 25% discount on eligible charging sessions during the one-year promotional period.
This discount is separate from the $200 IONNA credit, meaning eligible customers can receive both the charging balance and reduced charging prices while the membership remains active. BMW has not described the $500 package as cash or a refund, and unused credits cannot simply be withdrawn as money.
The offer is available to customers purchasing or leasing eligible 2027 model-year BMW i5, i7, and iX3 vehicles. Customers who acquired qualifying vehicles before the November 5 launch date may also receive the benefits.
BMW’s public charging webpage describes the package more broadly as available with every new 2027 BMW electric vehicle, so buyers of additional models should confirm eligibility with BMW or their dealership rather than assume that every vehicle arriving later automatically qualifies.
The credits and membership benefits are generally valid for up to one year from the vehicle’s retail date, subject to the program’s eligibility and expiration terms. This means customers should pay attention to when the vehicle is purchased or leased instead of waiting until they begin using public charging regularly.
Which BMW Electric Vehicles Qualify and How Owners Redeem the Credits
BMW has initially included three 2027 electric models in the promotion, namely the i5, i7, and iX3. These vehicles cover different segments of its electric lineup, allowing the offer to appeal to buyers interested in a luxury sedan, a full-size executive sedan, or an electric SUV.
2027 BMW i5: The i5 is BMW’s midsize electric sedan, combining everyday practicality with the brand’s familiar luxury-sedan design. It offers an electric alternative to the gasoline-powered 5 Series.

2027 BMW i7: The i7 is the flagship electric luxury sedan. Its focus on rear-seat comfort, technology, and premium equipment makes public charging access particularly relevant to customers using it for longer journeys.
2027 BMW iX3: The new-generation electric SUV is based on BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture. Its 800-volt electrical system is designed to support high-power DC charging, making charging-network compatibility an important part of its ownership experience.
BMW says its electric portfolio will expand in the United States during the first quarter of 2027, with the iX5 and i3 scheduled to arrive. However, customers considering these future models should verify the promotional terms applicable to their specific vehicle and purchase date.
Redeeming the package requires using the My BMW app. Owners must navigate to the Charging section, open Services, select Charging Wallet, and then access BMW Charging Network. After completing the account setup and accepting the available package, the credits and membership benefits appear in the Digital Charging Wallet.
Once activated, qualifying charging sessions automatically draw from the available credit balance. When the credits have been exhausted, subsequent charging costs are billed to the payment method registered with the account. BMW also notes that a $50 preauthorization hold may apply to individual charging sessions when customers use the credits.
There are restrictions worth understanding before relying on the offer. BMW’s published terms exclude Tesla Supercharger and Electrify America charging sessions from the promotional credits.
The $300 balance is therefore not a universal payment allowance that works at every public charger. Customers should use the My BMW app or the relevant charging provider information to confirm that a station participates before planning a trip around the remaining balance.
The credits also have no cash value and are non-transferable and non-refundable. Owners who do not use the full balance before its expiration date cannot exchange the unused amount for money.
After the complimentary IONNA membership ends, customers can continue receiving the 25% membership discount by purchasing a paid subscription. Without that subscription, BMW says drivers can still qualify for a 10% IONNA discount when starting a session through Plug & Charge or the My BMW app.
Why BMW Is Expanding Its Public Charging Partnerships
BMW’s charging incentive is part of a wider effort to make electric vehicle ownership more convenient. Even customers with vehicles offering substantial driving range need dependable public charging access for road trips, long commutes, and situations where home charging is unavailable.
The challenge is not simply the number of chargers installed across the country. Drivers also need reliable stations, compatible payment systems, and clear information about charging availability.
BMW’s ChargingNetwork provides access to more than 180,000 compatible public charging points across the United States through the My BMW app.
The platform brings together different charging providers, allowing owners to locate stations and manage eligible charging sessions without switching between multiple applications. Participating providers include IONNA, Shell Recharge, ChargePoint, and EVgo, among others.
The integrated approach is useful because public charging remains fragmented across different companies. Drivers can encounter separate accounts, payment systems, membership plans, and pricing structures depending on which network they use.
BMW is attempting to reduce some of that complexity by bringing participating providers into a common digital experience.
IONNA plays a significant role in this initiative as a charging network formed through a joint venture supported by eight major automakers. Its founding partners include BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz Group, Stellantis, and Toyota.
The companies created the network to develop high-powered public charging infrastructure in North America, with a long-term ambition of at least 30,000 charging points by 2030.
BMW’s November announcement stated that IONNA had more than 200 operational charging locations nationwide, having more than doubled its network since the beginning of 2026. The company also highlighted IONNA’s first-place ranking among DC fast-charging networks in the 2026 J.D. Power U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience Public Charging Study.
The network’s charging stations are designed to provide more than charging stalls. Many locations include amenities such as restrooms, refreshments, markets, and driver lounges. This approach reflects an effort to make charging stops more comfortable, particularly for customers travelling longer distances.
The $500 incentive also gives BMW another way to introduce customers to its digital charging ecosystem. Once owners activate their accounts, they can use the app to find participating stations, manage charging sessions, and monitor their available credits.
The membership encourages customers to become familiar with IONNA rather than treating it as an unfamiliar network.
For BMW, this matters as its electric portfolio expands. The company is preparing to introduce additional models in 2027, while competitors are also working to improve charging access and reduce ownership costs.
Offering charging credits at the time of purchase gives BMW a way to address one of the practical concerns facing customers who are considering an electric vehicle.
The offer does not eliminate every charging expense, and the one-year validity period limits how long customers can benefit. Its value will also depend on whether owners live or travel near participating charging stations and how frequently they use public charging rather than charging at home.
BMW’s $500 package is more than a short-term purchase incentive. It is also an effort to connect new electric vehicle owners with the company’s growing public charging network and its IONNA partnership.

For buyers of eligible 2027 models, the credits and discounted membership can reduce initial charging costs, provided they understand the network restrictions and use the benefits before they expire.
The three eligible vehicles cover different customer needs:
- 2027 BMW i5: A midsize electric luxury sedan offering an alternative to the gasoline-powered 5 Series.
- 2027 BMW i7: BMW’s flagship electric luxury sedan, focused on premium equipment, technology and passenger comfort.
- 2027 BMW iX3: A new-generation electric SUV based on BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture, featuring an 800-volt electrical system designed for high-power DC charging.
BMW plans to expand its U.S. electric lineup during the first quarter of 2027 with the iX5 and i3. Buyers of those future models should confirm the applicable promotional eligibility and terms with BMW.
