Audi’s A5 lineup, which currently includes coupe, convertible, and hatchback body styles, is expected to welcome a new addition in the form of the A5 Avant wagon for the next generation. Known as Avant in Audi’s parlance, the wagon body style has been spotted in prototypes, along with what appears to be a high-performance RS 5 variant. Previous sightings have also captured prototypes for the sporty S5 Avant.

The upcoming RS 5 Avant is set to replace the current RS 4 Avant in overseas markets as part of Audi’s revised naming strategy, announced last year. Under this strategy, models with internal combustion engines will bear odd numbers in their names, while electric models will sport even numbers. This shift will see the next A4 model designated as an electric vehicle.

Distinguishing the RS 5 Avant prototype from the regular A5 Avant are various performance cues, including extra intakes in the front fascia, widened fenders housing a broader track, large cross-drilled brake rotors, and cutouts in the rear fascia to accommodate signature RS oval exhaust tips.

Notably, the prototype features temporary exhaust tips, while both a fuel filler cap and a charging port suggest a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Yellow warning stickers on the windshield hint at some form of electrification.

While details on the powertrain remain unclear, rumors suggest pairing the current RS 5’s twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V-6 with an electric drive system. With the current RS 5 delivering 444 hp, the next iteration is expected to boast significantly more power to rival the 671 hp of the Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 S E Performance, also a plug-in hybrid.

Anticipated to debut later this year, the new A5 Avant and S5 Avant will likely be joined by the RS 5 Avant next year. Additionally, Audi has been seen testing the next-generation A5 in its hatchback body style, though it remains uncertain whether new iterations of the A5 coupe and convertible will be launched due to sluggish sales for the two-door models.
