The unveiling of the CityAirbus NextGen prototype marks a significant milestone in the realm of electric air taxis. Developed by aerospace giant Airbus, this prototype was revealed to the public during a special ceremony at the company’s facility in Donauworth, Germany.
Attendees at the event had the exclusive opportunity to witness the first CityAirbus NextGen prototype in all its glory and gain insights into its specifications.
This innovative air taxi, designed for urban operations, including commutes and emergency medical services, boasts a 40-foot (12-meter) wingspan and an eight-propeller configuration powered by 16 electric motors.
Performance-wise, the CityAirbus NextGen promises a range of 50 miles (80 km) and a top speed just shy of 100 mph (75 mph/120 kph). With a spacious cabin accommodating up to three passengers alongside the pilot, Airbus aims to revolutionize urban transportation with this cutting-edge vehicle.
Looking ahead, Airbus plans to kickstart a flight test campaign later in the year, leveraging its new testing facility in Donauworth, specifically tailored for eVTOLs. This facility, inaugurated alongside the prototype’s unveiling, underscores Airbus’s commitment to advancing electric aviation technology.
Incorporating a plethora of advanced technologies, including a dedicated human-machine interface by Crouzet and a power distribution unit by Eaton, the CityAirbus NextGen epitomizes Airbus’s vision for the future of urban air mobility.
As anticipation builds for its maiden flight, this prototype heralds a new era of sustainable and efficient urban transportation.
