Airbus is making waves at the Farnborough Airshow with its PioneerLab project, a hybrid-electric helicopter demonstrator aiming to revolutionize the industry. Based on the H145 platform, this ambitious project will test innovative materials, aerodynamic designs, and a cutting-edge hybrid-electric propulsion system.

The goal is a staggering 30% reduction in fuel consumption and emissions compared to traditional helicopters. Airbus has partnered with Pratt & Whitney Canada to provide a powerful PW210 engine, replacing the H145’s standard Turbomeca Arriels to achieve this.

This new engine, electric motors, and a common gearbox will form the heart of the PioneerLab’s hybrid powertrain. Airbus is developing a hybrid-electric helicopter, the PioneerLab, to create greener aviation.

The aircraft will have a hybrid-electric powertrain featuring a traditional engine assisted by two electric motors from Collins Aerospace. These motors, capable of delivering 250 kW each, will enhance takeoff and landing performance.

While the rotor strike alert system is complete, the automated takeoff and landing system is under development. The project, which includes developing bio-based and recycled structural components and new production processes, is expected to take until 2027 before test flights can commence.
