Bentley has confirmed that further details regarding the replacement of the W12 engine with a hybrid setup will be unveiled in the coming months. However, Wayne Bruce, Bentley’s global chief communications officer, has already shared intriguing insights about the electrified powertrain, assuring that it will surpass the potency of the outgoing 12-cylinder mill.

“We have a new high-performance hybrid drivetrain coming in the not-too-distant future,” Bruce revealed in an interview with Australia’s sales. “The high performance that’s coming will have more combined power than the W12, but we’ll tell you more about that in the coming months.”

Anticipation for Plug-In Hybrid V8

It’s been confirmed that the final W12 engine will roll off the production line in Crewe by the end of April 2024, marking the culmination of a 21-year production span that commenced in 2003. Bruce noted that the last batch of W12-powered Bentleys, known as the Edition 12 models, has already been completely sold out.

Numerous test mules of plug-in hybrid versions of the Flying Spur and Continental GT were spotted undergoing testing last year. Based on these sightings, it’s anticipated that a plug-in hybrid V8 variant will be introduced, boasting over 650 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque – aligning with the performance figures of the outgoing W12.

The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 plug-in hybrid from the new Porsche Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid, generating 670 hp and 685 lb-ft of torque, is a probable contender for adoption.

Hybrids to Coexist with Pure EVs

In addition to hybrid offerings, Bentley is actively developing its inaugural all-electric model, slated for launch in 2026. This electric vehicle is expected to deliver double the power of the W12 engine, with four additional battery-powered models set to debut by the end of the decade.

Nevertheless, Bentley remains committed to offering plug-in hybrids during the transition to pure electric vehicles. Bruce predicts a growing demand for PHEVs in the forthcoming years, a sentiment echoed by several other automakers.

It’s anticipated that plug-in hybrid and electric Bentley models will be available concurrently, albeit under distinct body styles or nameplates. Essentially, Bentley won’t offer multiple powertrain options within the same model lineup.
