The Sportster lineage from The Motor Company has always held a special place in the hearts of custom motorcycle enthusiasts, with models like the Forty-Eight often serving as a blank canvas for builders worldwide.
Among these, the “Raging Dagger,” a bespoke creation by Rough Crafts based in Taiwan, emerged as a standout example when it was unveiled several years ago.
Renowned customizer Winston Yeh, the visionary behind Rough Crafts, shares a profound connection with the Sportster Forty-Eight platform.
His journey with this model traces back to 2012 when he crafted the “Bomb Runner,” a memorable custom build. However, the transformations executed on the “Raging Dagger” surpass even those of its predecessor.
The genesis of the “Raging Dagger” can be traced to a request from Harley’s Taiwan branch, linking Winston with a discerning client seeking a distinct vision for their 2018 Sportster Forty-Eight. The objective? To infuse the raw power of the American V-twin with the fierce aesthetic of a streetfighter, a departure from the conventional Harley ethos.
While prioritizing practicality for everyday riding, Winston opted for enhancements that wouldn’t compromise the bike’s structural integrity or core mechanics.
Instead, he focused on elevating performance through meticulously selected upgrades and substantial weight reduction, resulting in a remarkable shedding of 40 kilograms (88 lbs) compared to the stock Forty-Eight.
Upon its arrival at Rough Crafts’ workshop, the Sportster underwent a metamorphosis of monumental proportions. Virtually all factory components, suspension, brakes, and wheels were replaced with high-performance alternatives.
The rear end of the motorcycle underwent intricate structural modifications, adopting a suspension setup reminiscent of Buell models like the X1 Lightning.
To accommodate this setup, Winston ingeniously integrated a premium Ohlins shock absorber and a lightweight alloy swingarm from Trac Dynamics. Further innovation led to the creation of an angular oil tank, expertly crafted to envelop the swingarm, seamlessly integrating into its form.
The front suspension received equal attention, with Winston sourcing Yamaha R1-inspired upside-down Ohlins FGRT forks, seamlessly integrated via custom triple clamps.
Carbon fiber BST wheels were chosen for their lightweight properties, complemented by Pirelli rubber for optimal traction. Beringer braking components, including floating front discs and radial calipers, ensure precise stopping power.
In terms of aesthetics, Rough Crafts collaborated with MS Pro to fashion a striking monocoque bodywork, uniting the fuel tank and tail into a singular, cohesive unit.
Crafted from carbon fiber and adorned in black leather upholstery by Kingsmen Seat, the solo saddle exudes a blend of sleekness and aggression. Motogadget accessories grace the cockpit, while a bespoke titanium exhaust system, handcrafted by MS Pro, serves as the crowning touch of both performance and style.
