The silver screen has long cast a spell on automotive and motorcycle designers, and WYLD Garage’s latest creation is a testament to this cinematic allure. Directly inspired by the enigmatic SR-72 Darkstar from “Top Gun: Maverick,” the Arizona-based custom shop took on the ambitious task of transforming a neglected 1976 BMW R90/6 into a high-flying, two-wheeled marvel.
Despite arriving at the shop in a state of disrepair, missing essential components, and showing signs of neglect, the bike’s underlying potential was evident to the WYLD Garage team. Undeterred by the challenges ahead, they immediately set to work, breathing new life into this once-forgotten motorcycle.
The foundation for the bike’s striking aesthetic began with a complete overhaul of the wheels and hubs, which were meticulously refurbished and laced together with gleaming stainless-steel spokes.
To take the design to new heights, the team crafted custom lenticular aluminum covers for both wheels, resulting in a visually stunning and truly unique element that perfectly complements the bike’s character. The BMW R90/6 has been stripped down to its core, presenting a minimalist yet striking silhouette.
Shinko E270 tires, chosen for their retro appeal, grip the road while the absence of fenders emphasizes the bike’s lean, athletic stance. A repurposed Honda CG125 gas tank, notably slimmer than the original, is adorned with a billet aluminum cap, adding a contemporary touch to the classic lines.
The custom-made looped subframe not only supports the solo black leather seat but also cleverly integrates multi-function LEDs and upper shock mounts. While the rear suspension benefits from adjustable aftermarket shocks, the front end retains the original forks, meticulously rebuilt for optimal performance.
An LED headlight, mounted on a bespoke bracket, illuminates the path ahead, while a CNC-machined top clamp houses a Motogadget Motoscope Tiny speedometer. Clip-on handlebars, equipped with bar-end mirrors, and Cognito Moto billet foot pegs complete the rider’s ergonomic triangle, promising a dynamic and engaging riding experience.
