Custom bike projects often see owners entrust their machines to shops and patiently wait for the transformation. However, some enthusiasts crave a hands on experience to deepen their connection with their rides.
Viktor Dikanchev, a Sofia resident, is one such individual. He co-created the custom scrambler pictured above with Krasimir Tananeev of The Box. While strolling through Sofia, Viktor stumbled upon a 1982 Yamaha XS400 and envisioned its potential as a custom build.
He left a note for the owner expressing interest and quickly negotiated a purchase. The stock XS400’s outdated bodywork and underwhelming performance demanded a significant overhaul.

Undeterred, Viktor and Krasimir dismantled the motorcycle at The Box’s facility. A substantial portion of the stock equipment was discarded, and the powertrain underwent a thorough rebuild. The parallel-twin engine received new valves, seals, gaskets, and revamped Mikuni carburetors with custom velocity stacks.
The exhaust system was replaced with a stainless-steel unit featuring a repurposed Triumph Scrambler muffler and additional heat shielding for rider comfort. Viktor’s Yamaha XS400 was about to shed its ordinary skin. Krasimir, the mastermind mechanic, tackled the bike’s foundation with a complete subframe overhaul.
The process didn’t stop there a sandblasting treatment transformed the frame into a gleaming masterpiece. With the base gleaming, attention shifted to the running gear. An Aprilia became the surprise donor, offering up its wheels, swingarm, and even the suspension.

New wave style rotors enhanced the braking capabilities, while Continental’s TKC 80 tires provided all terrain grip. Borrowing continued with the rear suspension, this time from a Royal Enfield Himalayan. Now that the mechanicals were largely addressed, the focus turned to crafting a stunning exterior.
