Volkswagen is enhancing the performance of its electric SUV for the 2024 model year with the introduction of new electric motors. Both configurations of the ID.4’s powertrain, featuring a rear-wheel-drive single-motor setup and an all-wheel-drive dual-motor version, receive a substantial power increase for the upcoming model year.
It’s important to note that this enhancement is exclusive to models equipped with the larger 77.0-kWh battery pack, excluding the base 58.0-kWh battery-equipped ID.4s. Alongside these power upgrades, interior modifications, new wheels, and additional features for select trim levels have also been implemented.
In the case of the 77.0-kWh rear-wheel-drive (RWD) ID.4, the power output has been boosted from 201 horsepower in the previous model to 282 horsepower for 2024. This enhancement is expected to result in significantly improved acceleration compared to the 7.6 seconds it took the 2021 ID.4 to reach 60 mph in testing.
The dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) ID.4 experiences a power increase from 295 to 330 horsepower. The previous model achieved a sprint time of 5.4 seconds in testing, and the enhanced version is likely to perform even better.
Volkswagen also asserts that the new electric motors will contribute to an improved range, although specific EPA estimates are not yet available. The current range is rated between 255 and 275 miles with the larger battery pack, and incremental improvements are anticipated once official ratings are disclosed.
Additional upgrades for the 2024 ID.4 include a larger 12.9-inch infotainment screen for upper trim levels, promising improved menu structures and simpler climate controls compared to the previous 12.0-inch screen. The designs of the steering wheel and shifter have been revised, and cooled front seats are now standard.
The S Plus trim level gains a Harman/Kardon audio system, and there’s a shift from 19-inch to 20-inch wheels, with the S Plus model now featuring 21-inch wheels. While exterior photos of the U.S.-spec 2024 ID.4 are yet to be released by VW, a Euro-spec model with 21-inch wheels is pictured at the top.
The 2024 ID.4 is expected to arrive at dealerships early next year. While pricing details are currently unavailable, this information will be updated as soon as it becomes available.
