This Defender Convertible Fills A Gap In Land Rover’s Lineup

The original Defender was available in various configurations, but its contemporary counterpart is now offered in the 90, 110, and the larger 110 models. Notably absent from this lineup is a pickup truck, and Land Rover has chosen not to reintroduce a convertible version.

However, for enthusiasts seeking an open-top experience, there’s exciting news – Dutch coachbuilder Heritage Customs has transformed the Defender’s roof. Based on the Defender 90, the Valiance Convertible showcases a folding fabric top that contrasts with its Sunbeam Yellow body, marking the company’s second conversion. The previous build introduced almost a year ago, featured glorious white steel wheels, while the latest iteration presents a flashier appearance with larger two-tone alloys, including a spare one on the fifth door.

Heritage Customs went beyond removing the fixed hardtop to accommodate an electrically folding roof; they also added a full roll cage for increased strength and safety. Inside the cabin, yellow stitching complements the vivid exterior, and the seats are enhanced with black quilted leather upholstery. The dashboard features 3D inlays made from etched aluminum.

Notably, this Defender 90 includes the optional central front seat. Heritage Customs doesn’t maintain stock of Defender Valiance Convertibles; these made-to-order vehicles take a minimum of three months to complete and cost €82,500 (almost $90,000), excluding the donor car and applicable taxes. Production has been expanded, and the coachbuilder is preparing to unveil another Valiance Convertible build soon.

In the landscape of SUV convertibles in 2024, choices are limited, and one option is about to be removed. Volkswagen recently announced the discontinuation of the T-Roc Convertible after the completion of its first and only generation. Reminiscent of the old Defender, Land Rover once had another cabrio-SUV mashup in its portfolio – the short-lived Evoque Convertible.
